I've been meaning to recommend 'Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell' by
Suzana Clarke on this board for ages. Takes a bit of patience to
get into, but it's big, and good, and fun, and will keep you going
for a while. It's an historical fantasy, set around the beginning
of the 19th century in England, with magicians and fairies and a
prophecy, and the mysterious Raven King - very much an adult novel.
It's described in the blurb (amusingly enough) as Harry Potter for
grown ups. But that's not really fair, as the style is completely
different - Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings meets ... something
else I can't quite put my finger on. Beautifully written, a
plethora of fictional footnotes, and a handy sewn-in bookmark.
