Sheryll:

I know what you mean. I'm a fairly quick reader so
reading aloud seems very slow to me, too. For me, the
slowness of reading aloud is well compensated by the
shared experience. There's something very satisfying
about having everyone ooh, aah and laugh together at
the same spots. 

With OotP, we started out reading aloud. By mid-day
Saturday, after we'd had some sleep, breakfast and
more reading, everyone started having to wander off to
various other commitments and the rest of started
reading on our own. I'd have had to book days off work
to read the whole thing aloud!
