OMG, I remember those things so well!  They were quite a fad, at least
in the town where I lived, because it seemed that every front window
in the neighborhood featured a shiny silver tree turning red, then
green, then blue...   My family never had one, but we did get a
"realistic looking" fake tree when they came out.  The branches were
made of twisted wire, and the "needles" were dark green cellophane. 
After Christmas you could just take the decorations off, fold the
branches up against the trunk, and store it with ease -- my mom liked
that a lot.  And it actually did look pretty realistic, at least for
the first few years.
