I reallly like the British authors also. Try Jasper Fforde's 
Thursday Next series: The Eyre Affair or Lost in a Good Book. The 
Well of Lost Plots is due to be published in the US this or next 
month and I am looking forward to reading it. 

I plan to try Good Omens and Neverwhere - they sound really good.
