Regarding not introducing gay characters - Neil Gaiman said it well in
his blog when asked about gay characters in his works (I would link to
the entry, but neilgaiman.com is down, so here's a link to google's

"(One major character in Neverwhere is gay, although you'll not know
it until he develops a romantic liaison.) [...] I tend not to write
characters with sexual orientation as a starting point, unless that's
how they define themselves. Most people don't."

The "straight until proven gay" assumption isn't really... well, a
very good or fair assumption, really. JKR hasn't explicitly stated the
sexual orientation of the vast majority of her characters – and
filling in the blanks is one of the points of fanfiction. Another is
exploring areas where JKR probably wouldn't venture.
