Steve on "joined-up writing":

Alice:
Joined-up writing is "cursive", as you call it, I suppose (now we meet
the problem of me not knowing what "cursive" would mean), so when all
the letters are joined together.
Which in Lockhart's case IS a big deal, for he can now write like a
7-year-old, as opposed to a pre-school five-year-old, who would
probably use block capitals, if able to write at all. Writing my name
in block capitals was the first thing I learnt to write.
That's how I interpreted it, anyway...
Love, Alice
