I went and had a look at the recipe, and, yes, you do see things for 
sale called Spotted Dick which probably follow these general lines.

However, I'm pretty sure that the stuff we had at school was suet-
based, which IMO makes quite a difference.

Anyone with a Mrs Beeton to hand?
