JKR did say in the online chat that the shape of the scar isn't the 
only thing special about it. But reading PS, I should say that the 
scar was a result of Lily's protection. Coz rememeber that no one 
survives the AK curse. That means there is a power greater than that 
curse. That would be Lily's protection. So the scar would be mainly 
the result of the protection Lily gave.
JKR also hitned in the chat that we may well hear more news about teh 
scar in thye forthcoming books. (she does guard her plots!) Remember 
the romour that the last word in book 7 is 'scar' :-)
