For those of you who find excessive JAVA and overblown FLASH as
tedious as I do, here is a link to the Text Only Version of JKR's website.
For reference, I have tried both the JAVA/FLASH version and the text
version, and I still say the JAVA/FLASH version is tedious, slow,
difficult, but, yes, very fancy; even cute.

Just to add another teaser to the mix, JKR went to a MuggleNet Web
Chat and had this to say...
"Nobody was even remotely interested in my theories about what's going
to happen in book 7..."
Sometimes I think we think we know too much.

But with "text-only", are you able to see all the funny little "ads"
for magical products at the bottom of the "Rumours" page? I thought
those were hilarious - reminded me of the great fun and
lightheartedness of the early HP volumes. My favourite was
for "Magi-Me-More": "Spellwork losing its fizz? Charms gone stale
and droopy? Then you need...Magi-Me-More!!! Losing power and
concentration as you grow older? Roll back the years with Magi-Me-
More! One daily pill and you will be transfiguring like a wizard of
twenty!" Check the healer's warning, too.

Nope, but for those of us who are unable to get to the original
version, being able to read her answers for ourselves is still
better than reading what is being distilled for us. (Although I do
thank all of those who have taken the time to do that!)

First off... Thank you very much to Jdr for the link to the JKR new
and improved websight. Awesome!
I am sure that most if not all of you are enjoying this site right
now as much as I am. I would like to add, for those of you that may
not know, that the Flash program is essential to the "hidden" clues
that JKR has hidden throughout this website. Try the # to the MOM on
the cell phone.

Sherry I am so sorry that you cant get flash, that is where all the
clues are hidden. Hopefully many people like myself will inform you
of the clues that we will find. The one I suggested is the cell
phone# on her messy desk were you dial in the MOM # and you are
privey to a JKR original (?) of her deleted scene in PS/SS (that
supposedly gave too much away). The letter looks like the one Hagrid
sent the kids in POA with tear drops that smudged it making it
difficult to read. I am still trying to decipher what was written.
Very tedious, but fun. Will try to keep you informed.

But you don't seem to get the 'hidden potterabilia' on the text only

find things.

I quite agree with you, it's driving me crasy as well. I left my pc
on the page with the door and when I came back to it, there was a
message on the mirror beside the door that says Peeves woz ere! Maybe
we just have to let that page stay up for a while without touching
anything and it will give a clue to open the door.

I did that with the desk and when I came back the phone was ringing. I
answered it and could detect voices but not what was said. Then I guess
I hung it up and couldn't make it work again. I can't figure out the
door or really the whole portkey thing with the awards which seemed far
less than it could have been so I figured I was missing the point.

I "think" I turned the radio on. Did anyone have music when they first
opened the site ? I didn't and then after playing around I did. Also,
as for the awards. I just got that to work. You have to click the
"Immeritus" and then the parchment opens. After you read it, go to the
two movable awards with the ? mark on it. Drag them into place (the boxes
next to them) and you'll receive another something for your scrapbook.

I suspect that is what we need to find the clues for. I've either
totally messed up or found 3 of the 4 clues, but where they've gone,
I haven't figured out yet.

If you go to Extra Stuff and rub the eraser over the blank paper on
the bulletin board, you see 4 objects that are supposed to go
someplace. When I clicked on the feather (Fan Sites), potion bottle
(Links), and the leaves on the bulletin board, they disappeared. I
haven't found the bug yet, other than the spiders that crawl all
over the pages.

That's what I deduced as well. I imagine after all 4 are found, the ?
will become a link/portkey ! I'm thinking as to where they went that they
are just saved on your computer, just as the scrapbook items are and will
all appear when they're all found.

It happened to me just before I read this post. The person on the
line says, "Hello? Hello? Who's there?"
The pen holder has been tipped over, so I think Peeves was on that
page also.
Also, the doorbell rings, the dog barks and the radio tunes in and
out. And what is it with the spiders, moths and flies on each page?
Like her books, are these clues or fun details?

You're right about not getting anything else done today...talk about
obsession! Fun but frustrating.
A few things that JKR said that were clues to this puzzle:
dont knock anything over
watch out for peeves
patience is a virtue
I knocked over the cup on the desk or I should say a wind came
through and you saw a bug like shape that must be peeves knock over
the cup. When this happened the hands on the watch began to move.
I guess this is where I should just sit and wait...patience is a

It's a clue for one of the rewards.

Earendil (answering to her own post...)
The spider is the bug, and as someone said on another post, all four
clues give you access to a bonus page.
Now another bonus page that doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet.
It's on the links page (not the fan sites page). Click on the book
with a question mark and move it: behind is the key to the small

This post contains serious spoilers for the <www.jkrowling.co.uk>
web site.
If you would rather explore it on your own, then do /not/ read
any further!
This section even contains links directly to the special rewards content:
It can also be disclosed that there are currently exactly four rewards.
Sections:
Each section is reached by using a 'Portkey'. Going back is done in
one of two ways. Either a Close" button will appear in the upper right
corner of the screen, or the Portkey that took you to the section will
appear somewhere on the page (usually the lower left corner). I have
noted only the sections with a close button - the rest use the Portkey.
Main page (the desk):
The spider for the 'potion' reward can be easily clicked while sitting
still on /The Daily News/. Click the switch in the upper left corner
to turn light on and off. Wait long enough and Peeves will come by
overturning the pen stand after which a bug of some kind will flutter
over the desk. Wait long enough and the phone will ring. Answering the
phone you will hear Rowling asking if there's anyone there. The
butterfly so far hasn't been reported to do anything, but be sure to
check it periodically.
"Links" section (the book case):
Portkey: The blue pen lying near the bottom left corner of the desk.
The Potions bottle for 'potion' reward. Wait long enough and Peeves
will come by blowing the candle out. Enjoy the titles on the spines of
the books, and the moving photographs at both sides of the book case.
The butterfly so far hasn't been reported to do anything, but be sure
to check it periodically.
"Fan Sites" section (the trophy case):
Portkey: The key in the middle of the desk. The feather for 'potion'
reward. Wait long enough for Peeves to come by, disturbing the ribbons
on the fan site award and removing a couple of Enjoy the names on the
various awards. The spider (so far) does nothing. Return later to see
if this has changed.
"?" section (the mysterious door)
Portkey: the elastic hair band next to the key at the upper left
corner of the note pad. Click the switch on the right-hand side of the
door to turn the light on and off. Wait long enough for Peeves to come
by, leaving a message on the mirror and overturning the plants.
If you discover how to open the door, be sure to shout it in every
corner of Harry Potter on-line fandom ;-)
"Extra Stuff" section (the notice board):
Portkey: The coffee cup on the right hand side of the desk. The leaves
for the 'potion' reward. Wait long enough for Peeves to come by,
blowing away a few notices.
Enjoy the extra stuff - be sure to read it all ("Edits", "Characters"
and "Miscellaneous").
Click the on/off switch to turn the radio on and off.
"F.A.Q." section (envelopes)
Portkey: the paper clips between the notepad, the coffee cup, the
calendar and the keyboard. The feathers apparently don't do anything
(yet). Be sure to enjoy all the sections "About Me", "About the Books"
and "Other Stuff". Open a section by click the correspondingly stamped
letter. Inside the F.A.Q. (opened letters) Portkey: Any of the
envelopes in the F.A.Q. section. Close button. You can navigate the
sections by moving your mouse over the slip of paper projecting from
under the left hand letter. There you will also find the "F.A.Q. Poll,
where you can vote for questions - supposedly to be included in the
F.A.Q.
"Wizard of the Month" section (calendar note)
Portkey: The calendar in the upper right corner of the desk. Close button.
"Rumours" section (magazine)
Portkey: "The Latest Rumours" magazine lying under "The Daily News".
Close Button. Rumours on the left hand side ("Gossip"), debunking on
the right hand side ("Exclusive") - be sure to read them all and
return periodically to find new. Enjoy the ads on the bottom of the
pages.
"Biography" (diary)
Portkey: The diary lying under "The Latest Rumours". Close button.
The fly so far hasn't been reported to do anything, but be sure to
check it periodically.
"News" section (newspaper)
Portkey: "The Daily News" newspaper lying in the lower left corner of
the desk. Close button. Enjoy the news.
Rewards:
"First typed manuscript of Philosopher's Stone" - the 'potion' reward.
<http://origin.jkrowling.com/scrapbook/archive/8_typed_halloween.htm>
"First typed manuscript of Philosopher's Stone - did it on
a manual typewriter and consequently had to re-type the
entire chapter every time I changed a paragraph. Then I
had to re-type the whole thing anyway, because it wasn't
double spaced."
1: Click the coffee cup to go to the "Extra Stuff" section - a notice
board.
2: Click and drag the blue & white thing looking like a rubber (it
should have been bright red as it is obviously a Revealer) and use it
to "rub" the blank piece of paper on the left-hand side of the board.
A drawing will appear indicating that four items should be used for a
reward (arrows pointing to a cauldron, I wonder if it's leaky?, marked
with a "?"). A feather, a Potions Bottle, a spider and a couple of leaves.
3: Click on the leaves near the upper left corner of the board. They
will disappear to 'go into the cauldron'.
4: Go to the main page (the desk) and click the spider - it is easiest
to do while it is sitting still on "The Daily News".
5: Go to the "Links" section (the book case) and click the Potions bottle.
6: Go to the "Fan Sites" section and click the feather.
It doesn't matter what sequence is followed or whether the drawing is
Revealed - collecting the four items will earn you the reward in any case.
"Ancient drawings (Page 4)"
<http://origin.jkrowling.com/scrapbook/archive/9d_drawing_group.htm>
"This very old drawing comes from "The Midnight Duel" chapter of
"Philosopher's Stone". As you can see, Dean originally joined Harry,
Ron, Hermione and Neville for the adventure. As you can see from the
written caption, Dean was called "Gary" in those days."
1: Click on the key to go to the "Fan Sites" section - a trophy case.
2: Click and drag the two medals maked with a "?" onto the two medal
cases on the middle shelf to receive the reward.
"Very early page of Philosopher's Stone"
<http://origin.jkrowling.com/scrapbook/archive/7_written_flamel.htm>
"Very early page of Philosopher's Stone written around 1991 and
showing plot-line that was abandoned. Would have changed everything!"
1: On the main page: Press the number to the Ministry of Magic on the
cell phone (6-2-4-4-2) and press the green button with the phone to
receive the reward.
"Page of Doodlings (Page 2)"
<http:/origin.jkrowling.com/scrapbook/archive/12b_drawing_sortinghat.htm>
"This is a page of doodlings from which the Sorting Hat emerged. In
the top part of the page are all the possible ways of 'sorting' people
I considered ... a panel of ghosts or prefects, a magical gateway
through which each person would have to pass and so on. I also though
of drawing names out of a hat, which became the sorting hat, and at
the bottom right corner you see my first drawing of the Sorting Hat,
with the first for lines of its first ever song."
1: Click the pen to go to the "Links" section - a book case.
2: Click and drag the book with a "?" on the spine to the left to
reveal a key.
3: Drag the key to the keyhole of the box on the right side of the
screen (next to the candle). A small bubble with a "?" appears out of
the box.
4: Click the bubble to get the reward.
And as a special bonus - how to open the door:

I have gone into each room where you received a scrapbook page and
waited til peeves came:
The first room Extra Stuff, he moved a business card
The second room Fan Sites, he took the 1st prize ribbon
The third room Links, he blows the candle out
The fourth room, the damn door room, he writes on the mirror and
knocks over the vase of flowers
Then I went back to the main desk and when peeves came through, the
watch on the desk top glowed green for a second and turned into a red
and black compass looking thing and turned back into a watch before I
could try to open it. If it could be opened.
Snow- I will figure this out! I hope!

I wouldn't be surprised at all ;-)
But pray tell?
(I have deliberately not gone into the main contents - i.e. the Fan
Site Award)
