Joywitch, LOON that she is, said:
I think that the big black bug-looking thing that flies across the main page
of JKR's desk after Peeves knocks over the penholder is not a bug, but a
doxy. Just MHO, but it seems to fit the description.
Animallover_11 asked
What is a Doxy?
And I, LOON that *I* am, answer:
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them states thusly:
Doxy (sometimes known as Biting Fairy).... The Doxy is often mistaken
for a fairy though it is quite a separate species. Like the fairy, it has a
minute human form, though in the Doxy's case this is covered in thick black
hair and has an extra pair of arms and legs. The Doxy's wings are thick,
curved, and shiny, much like a beetle. Doxies are found throughout northern
Europe and America, preferring cold climates. They lay up to five hundred
eggs at a time and bury them. The eggs hatch in two to three weeks.
Doxies have double rows of sharp, venomous teeth. An antidote should be
taken if bitten.
Harry encountered Doxies in the cleaning of the drawing room at 12 Grimmauld
Place; there was an infestation in the curtains. They used doxicide and
sprayed them as they flew out.
And a question, now--I recall that after they finished cleaning, there was a
bucket of doxies, but also a bowl of "their shiny black eggs." Fantastic
Beasts says, however, that they bury their eggs. Where would they have
buried them in Grimmauld Place? Under the carpet?
As for Joywitch's thought--we'll have to see if we can spot those extra arms
or legs, eh? I only saw it once but I think she may be right. I also note
that it's entirely appropriate for her to spot this and not me, since I live
in anything but a cold climate and do not have native doxies here, but her
cave probably has a native population, so that she's seen them in flight
many times...
