Hi All,
... Snipped discussion about driver training in USA and Europe ...
This is weird. It is true that driver training in the UK is more lengthy
and more rigorous and has a higher age requirement than driver training
in the USA (the two countries I've driven most in). But drivers in the
USA (at least in the Pacific Northwest) are sooo much better than
drivers here in the UK. They drive slower, they stay calmer, and they
allow for, and are more forgiving of other driver's errors. I think East
Coast driving may be more like the UK, but West Coast driving is a
dream. Can you imagine a four way stop in the UK? There'd be a huge pile
of carnage in the middle.
Can I tell a non-PC anecdote? I too failed my driving test first time,
and I also failed it second time (this was in Brighton, UK). I had the
same examiner both times, a short Italian man. At the end of my second
failure he turned to me and said "driving is like making love to a
woman, the more you do it, the better at it you become". Given that this
examiner had a reputation for austerity among the local driving tutors,
it was a very odd moment.
Cheers,
Dumbledad.
