Ahh I remember Driver's Ed . . . I grew up in New Jersey and the
rules have changed since then. Today you cannot get a lic. until you
turn 18, same is true for NYC. NJ's requirements sound pretty much
the same as those in the UK. We had to pass a written test with at
least an 80% to get a 1 year learner permit at the age of 16, which
was followed by a mandatory 6 hours of behind the wheel with an
instructor. That was done on our own, out of pocket. On your 17th
birthday you took the Dept of Motor Vehicles test. The NJ test is a
course not on real streets and the maximum speed limit on the course
is 15mph. IMO not a real good test due to the fact that nowhere in
NJ is the speed limit 15. During the test you may fail only one of
the following required tasks, however if you or the instructor is not
wearing a seatbelt you fail automatically: parallel parking, three
point turn, left turn, right turn, stop sign, stop line, speed limit,
and backing up in a straight line. I still cannot back up in a
straight line many years later :)! Having moved to the City That
Care Forgot, I have given up my car and instead drive a bright pink
bicycle with a big basket! Given the cost of gas and car insurence,
I feel like I'm playing a big joke on everyone who drives an SUV!
