The messages which have been posted already imply that everyone can at least agree he was a 'great' man, for instance - a POV which I find extremely offensive, and profoundly disagree with.
I don't want to start a flame war, and will not post further about the subject, but the topic is one which is very far from innocuous.
I have not posted on this site or the main site in a long while (I had a death in my immediate family and have not felt much like anything). As most of you who have been around for a while know, I am very wiccan and can bristle strongly at christian posts (I have even gone so far as to block any Hans posts from even coming through). I have to say that while many of the things that the Pope stood for, I do not agree with, he was a great man. He stood for what he believed in. He reached out to without trying to change people who believed differently than him. As far as we know, he was not corrupt in any way - which is very rare for someone with power. So while I do not agree with him, I have lit a candle for him on my pagan altar and have shed a couple of tears in respect. Men (or women) like him are very rare and precious. The world is a little darker today.
