My take on this was simply that the TOnks/Lupin romance was used
as a red herring to make you think that something fishy was up with
Tonks (was she a spy? being impersonated via polyjuice? feeling
terrible remorse for killing Sirius while faking unconsciousness?).
I think the relationship itself was intended (and hope it lasts!).

This I think was a simple misstatement on Jo's part, which she
immediately corrected. Fawkes _IS_ seen in DD's possession the
pensieve in book 6, but most definitely not with anyone else. The
point, I guess, being to emphasize Fawkes' close personal bond with
DD. And given Harry's final declaration of loyalty to DD, of which
Fawkes clearly approves... ok, he'll play a role.
Having interviewed folks on camera (and been interviewed myself),
then transcribed the dialogue, I would hate to hold anyone
accountable for every little slip of the tongue. Most people would
be horrified at a written transcript of their own spoken words
(including ums, ers, uhs, erms, etc). Editing is everyone's friend.
Of course, with Jo we have to hang on every word while waiting, and
end up spending countless hours analyzing meaningless mistakes.
