Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005 movie version)

I finally saw the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie with
Johnny Depp, and while I thought the set, effects and acting were
good, I still preferred the 'original' with Gene Wilder. As
appropriately eccentric as Wilder was, there was more... 'heart' to
his character. Gah, I once had the book but I don't remember if I
read it in full to determine which movie version is more 'true' to the
book. :-\

Touching back to HP, probably one of the reasons why I like reading
Snape in fanfic is because of Alan Rickman's portrayal. In the books,
Snape seems such an 'untouchable' character but Rickman shows these
*brief* moments of concern/care and this adds an element that I can
connect with the character versus book!Snape--this 'less prickly' side
probably exists in book canon to some degree but expression, action,
voice inflection tends to be more obvious for me.

Depp's portrayal of Wonka makes the character seem so... 'separated'
from what I can connect with, which is probably a credit to Depp's
acting but transferring empathy for his character wasn't as... smooth
as was the case with Rickman's portrayal of Snape.

I know, I know... Snape is not a nice person but it's also the
wondering, if circumstances had been different, he *may* have been
nice.
