I learned a few years ago that companies can't give honest references 
anymore.  I was told that if I was asked for a reference for a person 
who'd worked for me, I was to tell them NOTHING other than that the 
person had worked for me.  If they'd been a bad employee I was not to 
warn the other company, because the person could sue our company for 
defamation or something.  If they'd been a good employee I couldn't 
praise them, because then if they did something bad on the new job 
the other company could sue our company for recommending them.
