I just read on The Leaky Cauldron that Rupert Grint hasn't finished
reading OOtP! How is that possible? I don't know how I am going to
survive until July 16th. I'm debating whether or not to read all
the books over again again before then. And he hasn't even finished
book 5! It boggles the mind.

Well, according to Sean Aston's autobiography about making Lord of the
Rings, Elijah Wood never finished reading the trilogy, but he still did a
damn good job playing Frodo. On the other hand, there were actors like
Christopher Lee who had read the books every year for many, many years and
knew them inside and out. And Aston claims he didn't even know what his
agent was talking about when he was first asked if he'd like to try out for
a part in Lord of the Rings. he went to a book store and asked for Lord of
the Rings and was shocked to see ... was it several shelves? ... can't
remember his exact description, but tons of LOTR and Tolkien stuff. So, I
guess you don't have to read the books to be able to act in the movies, but
I still think it helps. Or at least, if the director and writers have read
the books it would help, because the direction and script can help the actor
get into the part, even if the actor is somewhat unfamiliar with the story.
