Vivamus:

Hi, Sandra. Canon means in the writings of JK Rowling, either in the books,
or in confirmed things she has written or said about the books. It means
assumed authority.

Vivamus:
Fawkes' arrival was convenient, but not a coincidence by any means. Harry
*called* Fawkes to him by his loyalty to DD, as DD hinted at before he left
and later explained to Harry. So Fawkes showed up with what was needed
because that is what a phoenix does -- or, that's what DD told Fawkes to do
before leaving. No knowledge of the CoS was required.

It's true, we haven't seen much about Fawkes yet, but I think he is quite
important to the overall story arc in ways that haven't been revealed yet.
I wouldn't write him off as a MacGuffin just yet. There have been some
very interesting speculations about Fawkes.
