You asked a lot of good questions here. Many I would like to know
the answer to myself and I think JKR will reveal all by the end of
book 7. However, I would like to address the one part about the
state of the Potter's house. I recall how every time there is
a "duel" of some sort, or kids are learning new charms and spells,
how chaos happens when they miss their mark (think of the DA's in the
RR). So if LV and James are dueling, the house is getting destroyed
around them. Perhaps James is deliberately adding to the destruction
to provide obstacles for LV, thus buying more time for Lily and
Harry. I've seen no canon regarding fire, only destruction.
Therefore, a pile of rubble, which is hiding Harry until Hagrid
rescues him, will also be hiding James, Lily, and LV wands, waiting
for someone to sift through to find. How easy for a rat to find the
prized possession(s?) and hide it somewhere (The Burrow?) until news
of LV return.
