Sandra:

>You're right - it's not altogether satisfactory.
>The reason the TT logic is convoluted is because JKR didn't work out
>>the underlying principles in the first place, the most significant
of which is that you >can't go back and save yourself from a fatal
(or near fatal encounter)
>if you only survive that encounter by going back to save yourself -
all on the
>same evening as well!! That just makes it even worse, and it
registers a
>maximum "10" on the Flawed Logicometer. I just don't understand why
people are
>so happy to desperately dream up a million different ways to make up
for a
>weak plot-device which simply doesn't work in the first place. JKR
does not
>walk on water, folks, and tyhe introduction and the implimentation
of the TT
>shows it. Wake up and smell the coffee - you ARE allowed to!

I never had issues with "how" the thing worked, even though Sandra's
rant explains why it annoyed me from the very beginning. And then
Harry can't use it to save Sirius because "Sirius wasn't saved" is
irritating beyond reason. Why even have the thing if it can only be
used under pre-arranged circumstances? (Events in PofA had to happen
that way. Because they did. Which means H and H had no say in how
events turned out.) Even more than it being a flawed plot device,
I'm angry that it allows her way too much freedom. I have a feeling
the TT is going to turn up again (shudder) and I will be thoroughly
annoyed if JRK uses it to write herself out of a corner. Any time
things get too sticky, she can just whip out the old Time Turner and
pretty up that nasty plotline so Harry can save himself and everyone
else again. Well, except Sirius, because he "wasn't saved".
