I've also taken several University-level English courses on children's
literature, and I'm in the middle of one right now. We're currently
looking at Treasure Island, Edith Nesbit's The Story of the Amulet is
next, and I can't help wondering if anyone on the list knows it? I had
never encountered it prior to the course, although most of the reading
list are books I at least knew of, if I hadn't necessarily read them
before. The others are:

Wind in the Willows
Winnie-the-Pooh
Charlotte's Web
Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang (Canadian content!)

Now me (K)

The Story of the Amulet - isn't that the sequel (possibly prequel, it's been
a while since I read them) to Five Children and It, with the Psammead? If so
it's delightful. The BBC did a TV adaptation of I think both but possibly
just Five Children a couple of years ago. The muppet-like Psammead is
fabulous. You should see if you can get hold of it. It was one of those
Sunday teatime/weekday 5pm 'children's' dramas they used to do a lot of -
like the Narnia Chronicles and the Box of Delights. The were all supposedly
aimed at pre-teens but I swear there were more adults enraptured by them
than kids.
