I suspect you have all heard of 'Walter Mitty' who is the hallmark,
the very essense, of dreams without life. His story first appeared in
1939. The story was a mere 2100 words long, but the character struck a
chord and "Walter Mitty" has become popular shorthand for any timid
soul who dreams of a more dashing life.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was made into a 1947 film with Danny
Kaye as Mitty; a proposed remake, to be directed by Steven Spielberg
and starring Jim Carrey, has been discussed but never released.

A thoroughly enjoyable read, and very short.
