I've enjoyed Diana Wynne Jones' books, finding them has been one of
the benefits of only being able to browse in the children's library
lately. I'd say her books are generally of the "feel-good" variety.
Also, Connie Willis is more of a sci-fi writer, but in many of her
books the characters and story are far more important than the sci-fi
aspects. Some of her books are upbeat and humorous (IMO), others have
left me with more complex feelings, but still very satisfied.
They're of a very different sort than you were specifically looking
for but Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin books are also very
enjoyable. I've sunk into mini-obsessions with that series in the
past. In a nutshell: historical, nautical setting, adventure, and
complex characters, especially the last.
Good luck!
