Finding books written as purely or brilliantly as HP doesn't really happen.
Eragon is a bore, though the author has potential. He wrote/published the book when he was 19, so I'm going to give his second book a try.
I only read the first in the series of Unfortunate Events. It was lame, a word here that means an unoriginal short-story, made long by tedious words.
I realize you haven't asked for a list of horrible stories, but for some reason people have enjoyed these. There is more on the list, but I'll stop.
Have you thought of reading Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass? Or any in the Oz series?
The Princess Bride is a great read, and it's funnier than the movie.
Another story that is way funnier than the movie and, truly, a different story altogether is Forrest Gump. The first one. In the second one, the author deconstructs Forrest Gump. I think because he was shafted regarding the movie. Regardless, it's much less funny.
I also agree with the person who suggested the Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett collaboration, Good Omens. There are some young characters in this book as well as angels and demons, seers, and the four horsemen. It's brilliant. Gaiman has written three or so children's books. Coraline is my favorite. It's a bit haunting, but in a creepy, good way. Pratchett's has a billion books out in his Disc World series. I tried to get into one of them, but it didn't stick.
Youth in Revolt is on my funny list as well, but it may be hard to find. Also, you will need a dictionary to read it. Seriously. I'm probably close to one standard deviation to the right of the bell curve when it comes to smarts. I know two others who are approach the second deviation, and they needed dictionaries. Sure not as often as I, but still... Also, it's youth(14-ish) focused though written for adults.
The Hitchhicker's Guide to the Universe is excellent British humour and fun sci-fi. I don't recall any youth, and there is no Earth.
And finally, Nancy A. Collins' Midnight Blue, A Dozen Black Roses, Darkest Heart, Dead Man's Hand. The first three are about Sonja Blue, kick-ass vampire (way better than Blade). It is hard to explain.
Obviously, there are books here that didn't answer what was asked, but these are the books that I've read more than once. And most give me a fix when I'm going through HP withdrawals.

To prevent the development of a full blown obsession brought on by
rereading the series over and over again (I'm currently a graduate
student in clinical psychology, so I didn't think that was a good
idea!), does anyone have any recommendations for novels to read
until the greatly anticipated date of July 16th?
I think that what I loved most about HP is that you immediately get
absorbed in the story and characters. I'm looking for something
written in a style like Rowling's - she expertly creates a
captivating world for readers without using a verbose and overly
metaphorical style that sometimes convolutes the story.
So far, everything I pick up just doesn't do it for me! I am usually
an avid Stephen King reader, but lately I've wanted a change from
scary, sci-fi thrillers and now prefer a "feel-good" book like HP. I
love the magical world of wizards and spells and young characters in
HP and wish to find something else like it:) The problem is that now
I'm finding it hard to find a book for adults that is written as
purely and brilliantly as HP.
Please help!
Becca :)
