asked for suggestions of good character-driven fiction
to tide her over while waiting for HBP.

Lois MacMaster Bujold has 2 series which are
marvelous.

The older, longer one is about Miles Vorkosigan (and
his parents, and his world). The series begins with 2
books about Cordelia Naismith and Aral Vorkosigan,
then moves on to focus on Miles. Miles is manic and
mesmerizing and engaging... He is also a physically
deformed person on a world where "mutants" are
regarded with horror and loathing. The synopsis
sounds grim, and it took me a while to actually pick
these books up, but I love them now. The books vary
wildly in tone, from relatively straight-forward space
adventure, to mystery, to romance; some are rather
dark, but all are leavened with humor. (e.g.,
synopsis of one book "Miles hits 30, 30 hits back")
Cordelia has a bunch of wonderful observations - one
of my favorites is "Check your assumptions. In fact,
check your assumptions at the door." (or words to that
effect) This is good advice for anyone reading these
books.

The newer series is a fantasy series - there are only
2 boks out now, but the third is due this summer. The
characters are wonderful, though much more loosely
linked than those in the first series. The world they
inhabit has 5 gods who interact with the people in
strange and subtle ways. The first book is _The Curse
of Chalion_ and the second is _Paladin of Souls_; the
upcoming 3rd is _The Hallowed Hunt_

I very strongly recommend any of Lois' books to
someone looking for character-driven fiction and a
good story.

Sue
