Welcome, Sabrina! So you're another one who came to HP by word of
mouth, and not because of the hype. I'm beginning to think the hype
turns off more nonreaders than it ever attracts.

Anyway, back to your question: I was not reluctant to pick up the
first book, but that's probably because I'm *way* over 18 -- we had
given the book to my daughter for a birthday present in 1999. I'll
pick up one of the kids' books once in a while and dip into them, and
fortunately HP was one of them. The rest, as they say, is history.

I've never been reluctant to carry and read an HP book in public,
either, for what it's worth.
