I can help, but then I can't help.
First, to anyone who is experiencing Hardware or Software problems the
two greatest forums I've found for getting clear answers from friendly
knowledgable people is ...
Virtual Dr.
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Virtual Dr. does have a forum specifically for Networking problems,
just look in the list of forums.
Hardware Central
http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/
...very nuts & bolts hardware oriented.
Both these discussion boards are run by...
http://www.internet.com/
which covers news, technical articles, discussion, and a wide range of
subject related to computers and the Internet.
Internet.com does have a section of general industry news and
information related to 'wireless'....
http://www.internet.com/sections/wireless.html
Anyone can read the forums, although, you do have to register to be
able to Post or Reply. However, they do NOT in any way use your
registration information for marketing purposes. All personal data is
kept strictly confidential. You will need to give them an email
address, but that is only so you can be notified when someone has
responded to your posts.
Another resource for computer-hardware&software, as well as industry
and Internet information including discussion forum is...
http://www.anandtech.com/
I haven't used this one as much, but it is a well respected tech-info
website.
Also, I found this tech support site when I search Google for 'etec
wireless DSL Modem configuration', While the search didn't direct me
to a specific answer on this forum, it none the less looks like a good
place, and they have a Wireless discusion group...
Hardware Analysis - Wireless Forum
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/forum/20/?o=50
By the way, the search of Google brought up about 4,200 hits.
Another alternative, try and find the ETEC website and check their
support area.
Now I speculate [ ...that's a first ;) ]
Data on networks does not travel in continuous real-time streams. All
transferred data regardless of medium (modem, DSL, network, mouse
interface, USB, whatever) travels in 'packets'. Think of a packet as
an envelope capable of holding one page of data. Think of transferring
one file over a network as sending a series of many related envelopes
each with one page in them. When all the envelopes reach their final
destination, the single pages they contain are reassembled into one
large file. In other words, all this takes time. Also, note that while
fast, wireless networks aren't as fast as wired networks.
Networks are fast enough that normal tasks like file transfer, remote
viewing of files and folders appear to happen in real-time, but in
reality they do not; data is assembled and transferred in short
bursts. To compound this, a poor wireless connection may cause
transmission errors, in which case the data must be transmitted
several time until it is receive without errors.
I speculate, and it is only speculation (ask the experts), that, do to
a variety of circumstances, your network simply can't keep up with
real-time discussion. The good news is, that I think it can be fixed,
although I can't give you specific advice on how to do it. I can
however suggest some area to investigate.
You may be able to set the packet size. In your case I would suggest
smaller packets. You many be able to locate your wireless router in a
better location so as to reduce transmission errors; usually means a
higher and unobstructed location.
Another suggestion, make sure your wireless network isn't configure so
that anyone in the area/neighborhood with a wireless network card can
connect to it. In an Internet Cafe, you want everyone to be able to
connect, but at home, you don't want the neighbor's kid surfing porn
using your connection, or viewing your files.
Also, somewhere in the configuration is the option to have all data
tranferred between the remote computers and the route sent in
encrypted format; that's always a good idea.
My personal advice may not have been much help, but the people at the
various forums I pointed out, I'm confident will be very helpful;
they've never failed me. Also, you can't be the first person to have
this problem, you can search the forums, and it's possible your
question has already been answered.
Good luck.
