I'm going to a Potter Party (thx to www.potterparties.com) in
Budapest, and have been signed up for it for a long time. It's at an
English (or rather, foreign) language book shop called Bookstation.
They're going to sell the book dirt-cheap, so I figured it would make
sense to go, even though I have my doubts about participating in
launch parties for, uhm, kid's books, having reached the towering and
impressive age of twenty-two.
But they keep sending me e-mails, and they're just so sweet about it!
It's all friendly and jokey and gamey... it's really beginning to feel
like I'm invited to a friend's birthday party. I now feel something of
a git/snob for having planned on arriving at half past twelve (the
books are to be sold at 1 a.m. which is midnight in England) and
looking snooty and cool.
I feel tempted to, er, actually go. In a way. A little bit. I might
even take a broom. Or something.
Today they sent me something called "The Marauder's Map" which
actually shows where the shop is located, complete with funny remarks.
Nothing terribly original, I assure you, but what makes it really good
is the apparent amateurness (I bet there's no such word, sorry) of it
all. This map has been drawn by some enthusiastic person with a bunch
of felt-tip pens. This enthusiastic person has obviously invested lots
of thought in the map, and produced something slightly resembling the
treasure-hunting maps my friends and I drew at the age of ten.
The TICKET to get into the party is a text-box in Microsoft Word, and
I have to print it out. It involves italics and a crafty font that
most of us probably used for our very first homepage.
I can't get over this. They're so cute. I am going to have to go to
this party. I'm going to have to play Activity and do various quizzes.
I'm going to have to look at owls and snakes borrowed from the
Budapest Zoo (yep, really :)) in a faux Care of Magical Creatures
lesson. I'm going to have to take my friend along. This is irresistable.
:)))
Sorry for being such an absolute snob. In fact I'm one of those sad
people who want to be cool and then end up falling in love with books
like Harry Potter. :)))
If there's anyone on this list from Bookstation, I wanna say: you're
great, you rule. See you on the fifteenth!
Love, Alice
