Don't give up hope. Did you call all the bookstores?
They said they're not pre-selling any longer, but does
that mean they don't have any copies left? I think
it's worth calling to check.

When OotP came out, one person in our group didn't
have a book pre-ordered. When it got close to
midnight, they had everyone line up in 2 lines, one
for those who'd pre-ordered and one for those who
hadn't. The person who hadn't in our group had no
problem getting a book. Mind you, we were among the
first in line and had our books 5 minutes after they
started selling.

I honestly think it's worth a call to your local
bookstores to see if *all* their copies are pre-sold
or if they'll have extras for sale at midnight.
