It probably depends on where you live, but I don't
think you'll have any problems getting a copy at
midnight. I didn't preorder OotP, just popped in
around 11pm and queued with all the others, and I got
my copy around half an hour after midnight. This time
I've cheched with my local Borders twice, and they
told me there is no need to prebook, they have such a
huge number of copies that everybody will get one - so
I didn't. It might be worth checking with
potterparties.com. They list all (most?) stores that
open at midnight, all over the world, and for each
party they say whether it's vital to prebook or not.
Both Waterstones and Borders in my town don't require
it, so you might be lucky too.
Hope this helps.
