Shaun asked about children's books.

These are ones that stuck in my own memory from childhood for one
reason or another:

The Case of the Silver Egg, Desmond Skirrow, thriller;
Bullwhip Griffin, Sid Fleischman, historical fiction;
Earthfasts, William Mayne, fantasy (Mayne was recently convicted of
child abuse and I know that has put some people off his work - will
that matter in your case?);
Midnite, Randolph Stow, historical fiction (and Australian);
The Midnight Folk; The Box of Delights, John Masefield, fantasy;
Kim, Rudyard Kipling, thriller (his finest by general agreement and
one of my favourite books ever);
Double Star, Robert A Heinlein, science fiction;
Any Biggles book, Capt WE Johns, thrillers - I know it's crap
writing and totally politically incorrect but I lapped them up so
others might - same for Tarzan, ER Burroughs;
Five Children and It; The Phoenix and the Carpet; The Amulet, E
Nesbit, childrens (fantasy) classics.

More recently:
Anything by Jacqueline Wilson, general;
Anything by Shirley Hughes, for very young children.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle, for the very young.
