I really have a ton of suggestions, but I like so many books that I
can't remember them! Oh well...here's what I've come up with so far.
I'm really bad with authors, but I'm sure you can figure them out :)
Most of the books are 10-13 age range. That's where I've had most of
my teaching experience.
Bridge to Teribithia
Tuck Everlasting
The shaddow children series is excellent. I got turned onto it when I
was student teaching in fifth grade (around age 11). The author's
last name is Haddix. There are five or six books so far I think. I
can only remember three of the titles - Among the Hidden (the first
one) and Among the Barons (the fourth one) Among the Brave (the
newest one - due out in paperback in August). It's about the US in
the "future" and they are put under population control where families
can have only one kid. Faimlies end up having more, and these extra
kids have to hide (in the shadows). It's really interesting,
exciting, and would be great for discussion.
Any of the Fudge books. They're by Judy Blume. They're alittle
younger in reading level, but are really funny. Kids usually love
them. They are also good to read aloud from.
The Sisterhood of the Traveleling Pants by Ann Brashares. It was just
made into a movie this summmer, which prompted me to buy the book.
It's a good story, but I havn't seen the movie.
In response to some other posts:
Dumbledad:
My twelve year old daughter currently loves the Louise Rennison
"Confessions of Georgia Nicolson" books
Amie now:
Those are hilarious! I read one for a university class assignment.
There's alot of sexual stuff in there, which makes some parents
uncomfortable. I think they're great fun though.
Kemper:
To Steve and anyone else considering Lemony Snicket. Don't. It is a
series of boring ennui. One might wonder if it is exceeding what is
necessary or natural even superfluous to use 'boring' and 'ennui' in
the same sentence. Hmm... not how it was used here.
Amie:
I completely agree! I'm glad I'm not alone. I tried REALLY hard to
read them because the kids just think they're great. It was an awful
experience. I couldn't make it through the second chapter of the
first book.
Well I could go on forever, but I have to stop myself. I hope this
helped! :)
~Amie, who is so overwhelmed by the number of posts on the main list -
I'm not even going to try to read them.
