They might be a little violent for kids, except perhaps high school age.
There is extreme violence and rape in Clan of the Cave Bear.  That first
book was fascinating as a possible glimpse into prehistoric times, but not
something I'd consider for children.  t least not parts of it.

This has probably already been mentioned , but The Chronicals of Narnia 
Series is a good read ... just finished them. Also , the Jean Auel series
with the 
first book being Clan of the Cavebear , although it is not kiddie lit ... is

very good and different than anything you have read. All the books are very 
long to , and if you are an avid reader like me , and want long books as
long as 
they are good ... this is a good series.
