Now that is truly sad. I know that in my grade school (50s and early 
60s) they just were not equipped to deal with gifted children. I was 
relegated to the back of the room so I would not be a disruption. One 
time, because I refused to participate in a group history project 
where my fellow students thought it would be great to put all the work 
on me, I was punished by having to do the all of the assignment by 
myself. Joke was on them because at least I got all the credit for all 
the work I did! (and my work WAS better then the group I had been a 
part of!) I will say the librarians I dealt with throughout my 
childhood seemed to be the most understanding and helpful (way more 
than any teacher I encountered) - I was reading in the adult book 
stacks long before my peers and every time the bookmobile came to my 
neighborhood the librarian had a big stack of books she picked out for 
me. I still get angry when I see people with the attitude that smart 
kids should "dumb it down" just to fit in........
