As for the money issue, I've never understood why people think it's
something worth conserving for the sake of it. Our current currency
is only thirty years old, after all, and considering how irritated
everyone was when Britain shifted from pounds shillings and pence, I
wonder that the decimalised pound has slipped into the national
heart so easily. There are plenty of reasons for and against Britain
joining the Euro, but sentimentality for the pound is (IMHO) the
least convincing.

Personally I couldn't care less what the currency is called (and after all -
pounds, shillings and pence came from the first European currency, Libre,
Solidai, Denarius = l s d. And I know I spelled them wrong, I have come
across them fairly regularly but always abbrevited) as long as it's decimal.
Just because mental arithmatic is one of my strong poins doesn't mean I want
to count in 12s and all the other odd numbers involved in pounds, shillings
and pence. Life is too short!
