Thanks for the suggestions!  I'll definitely look them up -- I plan to 
do a lot of reading this summer, as I'm staying in Pennsylvania until 
late July.  For the first time in my life, I not only have the spare 
time to devote to hours of reading, but also ample *access* to 
libraries and bookstores.  ^_^

I'm not surprised that the authors you came up with were male.  If 
anything, I find that, by and large, the female writers stick even 
closer to the gender-biased conventions of the genre than the men.  It 
seems backwards, but there it is.  Perhaps they're compensating.  ^_~
