I'm the one who originally asked the question.  It came up in dialogue
between two characters in the movie "Vera Drake" which was set in the
1950s, I believe. One woman said she'd been told the price was "two
pounds."  The second woman said the first had been told wrong, it was "two
guineas."  Hence my "what's the difference?" question.
