Thanks, Heidi! this is good information. i admit to much cursing and hair tearing over trying to find a fic. especially now, when I'm out of town and so don't have my personal list of fics I'm reading or want to read! maybe this will help.
i should also add that occasionally I have gone to google and entered a fic name into the search field and found some of them. so, that is another option.

Actually, you can, but you have to search by house, individually. At
one point, we wanted to get a Google comprehensive search thingy for
the whole site, but the cost was something like a thousand dollars a
year, which we don't have handy. There's two different sets of pages
on which you can do that type of search:
http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/ is our general issue
search page, with a number of different search engines. You can type
in an author name, a title, or a quote from a story into the GOOGLE
box on top, select the house, and see if you get lucky. If you don't,
on the next page, change the house, and you'll get it after three more
tries, if not before. It's a full text search engine, which is nice.
You can also follow the links from that page to the
keyword/authorname/.title search for each house - they're also at
http://www.schnoogle.com/cgi-bin/links/search.cgi
http://www.astronomytower.org/cgi-bin/links/search.cgi
http://www.thedarkarts.org/cgi-bin/links/search.cgi
http://www.riddikulus.org/cgi-bin/links/search.cgi
And, of course, all the reviewboard pages, as well as al lthe Park
pages, and every single fic listing page, includes a set of links to
fund authors by name, if you remember an author's name.
Anyhow, Crystaline Darkness and Guild of the Night are both at
http://www.schnoogle.com/authorLinks/Katling/ - they're by the same
author.
And we are working on a comprehensive search engine/fic archive
database - it's been in the making for a *long* time, and I'm really
pushing the techies to finish it well enough before HBP comes out. :
