Tonks here:
I listened to this. I think that some of the people saying that
adults reading children's books were dumb and poor readers are first
of all people who have not read the HP books. Also they may be folks
like Mr. Lebrecht and to be pitied. Perhaps Mr. Lebrecht was denied
a childhood. If he started reading what he says were Adult books
early on, then never having been a child, he has become one of these
stuffy intellectuals who don't know how to really live. I was more
disturbed by the comment by one of the participants who said that he
did not like seeing adults acting childish. Well we need to allow
our *inner child* room to play. So folks that are all adult all the
time are just not living a full live. And if they are concerned
about what other people think, then they are not all that adult
either. When you are really grown up, not only do you get to wear
purple, but you are your own person. You don't care what anyone
thinks, you do what you like as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. I
like to fly kites, watch the Muppets, go to some kid movies, etc.
And I don't have to drag someone's kid along to hide the fact
either. I even dress up as one of the characters in HP and go trick
or treating with my 80 year old friend! Enjoy life while you can!
Like my friend says "you will have plenty of time for peace and
quiet in your grave". Only the very young and very old are truly
*free*. And we can learn from them both.
