catkind:  It's a cunning evil trick isn't it? They make the first
version even worse than it has to be so that we're all relieved when
it goes back to "just" having really annoying formatting that takes up
far too much space. Not to mention yahoo get to demonstrate how well
they respond to user feedback. 
Cynicism mode off: You gets what you pays for.  We don't pay. It's
great that they're able to provide what they do for just the price of
the advertising. And to be fair, we're probably not the target
audience either, I suspect they design the system with smaller groups
in mind.
