I don't think there is anything in the movie to contradict your
interpretation, but I also don't think there is anything in the movie
to confirm it. So, it's as good an interpretation as any.

My main point was to dispell the assumption that Neville stole the
Gillyweed from Snape, which many people had trouble believing.

  I got the impression that the perhaps got it from the lake itself. There was that scene with Harry and Neville down by the lake when Ron and Hermione came down. When the scene came when Neville gave Harry the Gillyweed, that's where I thought he got it from. I couldn't make the assumption that Neville of all people would be bold enought to steal from Snape.
