Hm, I also like 28 Days Later... Zombies and Backstreet Boys, good combination, as evident by the Chinese duo. {g} I have at least a couple vids in mind with atrocious song to video source combination; thus, as a half Oriental--dunno where the other half of me is--I'm among the ranks of William Hung and Bai Ling as tone deaf... But Can They Vid, indeed. Also, I finally put in an order for new computer speakers, w00t! I've got two computer speaker sets (6 & 10+ years old) and neither work properly. :-( Waited for a 2.1 speaker set by Logitech to go on sale. I was getting motion sickness, and right now, I have a headache. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/ 'Bogey Man' did a long review of the movie on IMDB and also brings up the uncommon editing placed into this movie: [[ Those who blame the disturbingly strobing, pounding and restless (sonic) imagery of the beginning don't know how much camera is in cinema and how a talented maker can use it, depict and show with it. It is Hell we're witnessing at the beginning of Irr?versible so why would've No? made it look peaceful, calm and harmless as it's all really bad and wicked even and especially for those who support it as we soon learn at the Rectum finale. ]] Although, leave it to me, as I'm cringing at seeing a guy's head bashed in with a fire hydrant until it's a bloody pulp, the first hits really sounded like a basketball being bounced. Not to mention a homosexual sado-masochist 'dungeon' called The Rectum? Interesting to see editing used to complement a storyline with the end result deliberately causing an ill physical reaction. And now, when the mirror is fixed, when I click on the door in the mirror, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Luckdragon: Catlady, here are a few clues as to what could be wrong. Technical issues--a.k.a.--"Hey, why won't my computer let enjoy me J.K. Rowling's site?!" Various members have reported problems accessing the site from time to time. These problems can include screen-freeze when trying to access certain rooms, or still having the "Do Not Disturb" sign when others report that it's been taken down. Don't panic! Your computer is not conspiring against you. --First, try clearing your Internet Temporary Files (also called cache on other operating systems). --If this doesn't work, try accessing the site from another URL address: http://www.jkrowling.co.uk http://www.jkrowling.com --WizKid pointed out that some people may have pop-up blocker software installed on their computer. The layout of JKR's site will trigger the software and keep you from accessing the main page. The solution is to disable the pop-up blocker when browsing the site. --Another option pointed out by Khat is to go to www.jkrowling.com/en. Apparently this version of her site is configured in such a way that the pop-up blocker is not triggered. --Finally, I have noticed that the site will tend to act a little funny when there are a large number of visitors trying to access a given page (for example, my computer kept freezing when I tried to check out the FAQ's Poll the last time she updated. You might just try waiting a little while. The problem could clear itself up. **Thanks to Serge, WizKid, and Khat for this question and solution!** 4) Click on the pencil sharpener on the main page to get to the "Rubbish Bin" page. At the bottom of the page, you should see a bunch of words that need to be rearranged to make sense. Rearrange those by clicking and dragging them The right combination is "Here you get no ring within, Tap five times and I am in". Next, go back to the main page, and click on the large, black, paper organizing clip which will take you to the "Fan Sites" page. On that page, you should notice a small, red, ring box. As the instruction had told you, click on the box five times. It will open, revealing a sparkling blue bubble containing a blue question mark. Click on the question mark. First, never take more than the recommendation on the box or bottle. I think you double dosed on aspirin, but if you just did it the one time, you should be okay. Was it plain alka-seltzer, or a combination product? I would recommend acetaminophen, following manufacturers recommendations, generally 2 tabs every 4-6 hours, not to exceed 8 tabs a day. Keep hydrated! Caffienated beverages count as negative. You need to replace 1 glass for every caffienated beverage, in addition to the 8 a day you need. The acetaminophen should make you feel tons better. For nasal decongestion, you could try a saline nose spray or pseudoephedrine. AVOID Afrin and related nasal sprays. The nose will become addicted to them, and you'll be congested from rebound congestion. Echinicea has had mixed results- it is no longer recommended for daily use in preventing infection, but can have use in limiting duration of illness. So you could use this now if you wish. I believe when Hermione and Ron went for their test, they left the school to do it. That is somewhat implied, but I don't think it is stated specifically. Based on my recollection, I thought they tested in Hogsmeade. My guess is that, unless extreme circumstances pervent it, mid-summer, Harry will go the the Ministry of Magic with Ron and take his test there. Although, it is possible that the test doesn't take place literally at the Ministry. They may asemble there or at some other convenient location, and take the test. The key point is that Apparation Testing and Hogwarts are completely separate. Just a thought. Message-ID: Hi! As some of you might be aware by now, last week I gave an interview about Harry Potter crafts and my Harry Potter Crafts group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HarryPotterCrafts/) that has appeared on Pottercast #33 this week. Since then the group has grown a lot, and I am very happy about it. But there is more to it than that. Melissa Anelli, webmistress and head editor of The Leaky Cauldron (www.leakynews.com) e-mailed me this week to ask me to create a full Harry Potter Crafts section on her website. And of course, I agreed to do it on the spot. But of course, I can't be expected to conjure up 25,000 crafts tutorials (not that I think I'll put up that many, but still!). And so that's where you can come in. I am looking for patterns, tutorials and pictures! As you all know, there are a bunch of tutorial already available on the net. But rather than posting a bunch of link (like what we do here in the links section), the tutorials and patterns will be featured directly on The Leaky Cauldron, for better visibility! A link will also be added to the original website the pattern comes from (if you have one), and your name will be mentionned as the author. I'm looking for ALL types of Potter-related patterns: robes, cloaks, hats, wands, boxes, trunks, EVERYTHING! Now here is what you have to know: ~ Patterns/tutorials have to complete and clear. Make sure a 5 years old can understand them easily (or almost!). Write a detailed supplies list first (make sure to include quantity, company names, colours/colour numbers whenever possible), then detailed step-by- step instructions. If you can, add photos to accompany each step (if you are sending me the pictures as attachements, simply write, for example, ADD PICTURE1.JPG in the text and I will understand. ~ Your patterns/tutorials need to be written in plain English. No netspeak. Write them as if they were going to be published... as they will be, afterall! ~ Pictures must be renamed! The name of your picture will be considered the name you want for its description, followed by your own name, with caps for every new word (for example DumbledoreDollJos?e.jpg). If I get a bunch of pic3204.bmp, I will rename them without consulting you... but better you than me! ~ When you send your things, make sure to also mention your name (as the author of the tutorial or the person featured in the picture), and the URL of the website where we can find the tutorial you sent (NOT YOUR PERSONAL WEBSITE!), if there is one. Everyone can participate to this. If you made something Potterish, you can submit it for the crafts section. And as The Leaky Cauldron gets between 70,000 and 1,000,000 hits a month, this will undoubtedly increase visibility for your website. And if you don't have a website, you will be featured as a great Harry Potter crafter! Please send your submission(s) to harrypottercrafts at gmail.com as soon as possible please, so I can get to work. ;) I will be contacting some of you personally over the next few weeks, so don't be surprise if you have an e-mail from me waiting in your mailbox! Oh! And though this new addition to the Leaky Cauldron does not have to remain top secret, it is still under construction, and so not everyone needs to know about it. So I'm telling you, but don't tell anyone... unless they have crafted something Potterish, of course! I hope you will all fill my inbox soon! Maybe your daughter could read a book while getting her hair colored :)) I guess I should not think that if reading was my favorite pasttime all my life including my teen years ( which took place a bit more than decade ago), that many teens would do so. I asked her what would she like : adventure, love story, etc. Eventually I recommended "Pride and Prejudice", but I don't know if she accepted, when I left she stood with the book in her hands near the display. I really just didn't focus on the questions, I was watching a baseball game at the same time LOL. I am glad that JKR has updated the website. It will be awhile before the book comes out. For those of use who are addicted, even a little new stuff is enough to keep us going. In the meantime, I'm working my way through Patrick O'Brien's Master and Commander series. I'm up to The Yellow Admiral, with only two books left after that. I find myself reading slower, because I love the books and don't want them to end. In this case, there won't be any more, since the author died a few years ago. Then again, I could do what I've done with Harry and reread. But with a 20 book series, that is a big commitment! I can't just read one here and another there. When I saw the movie and found out it was based on a book, I just figured I would read the book. When I got to the bookstore and realized that the movie came from the tenth book, I couldn't just read that one. I had to start at the beginning. Then I got hooked lol. I started reading the series last May and hope I won't finish until the end of the school year (I'm a Middle school English teacher). If anyone is interested in talking about M &C write! My Hubby and I both took the test and had our Student ID Codes printed out from the computer. Mine worked perfectly, but his will not work regardless of what we do. We too tried using zero's in place of the O in our code, and neither made a difference. I can only assume that it is a computer error, unfortunately there's nothing that can really be done. If Jo was interested in selling the most books, November which is the month before Christmas, and therefore the peak book-buying time, would be perfect and 31 October 2007 would be most appropriate. All the schools in the English speaking book reading world would have to close down for a week. It could be the start of a tradition so the first week in November would be called the harry Potter break. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published by Bloomsbury Children's Books on 30 June 1997. So 30 June 2007 would be the appropriate ten year anniversary date. And of course there is the magical date of 7 July 2007, Or Harry and Jo's birthday of 31 July 2007. No one has set the movie release date in stone so maybe it will be delayed because of the great effort needed to make one hundred House-Elves come alive. After trying to catch-up on some HP LJ reading, I noticed one HP group reference 'large asteroid about to destroy earth, end of the world great sex, w00t' as a fic bunny and it reminded me of the second meteor shower hitting Smallville. Lex leaned down to tell his 'comatose' (alien artifact stunned/zombie mode) father, Lionel, about being the son his father wanted and then asked security to take Lionel upstairs (a later scene showed Lionel on a bed). Now, if I can make something out of Goblet of Fire's graveyard battle between Harry Potter and Voldemort (BDSM, voyeurism, touch of necrophilia and incest since this is occuring on Voldemort/Riddle's dead father's grave), then I can make some inappropriate connections with Lex and Lionel. > Seriously, I thought a lot of the actors were > noticeably *off* last night -- especially Lana (who I think normally > does a perfectly acceptable job), but even Lex seemed a bit weird. At Still haven't seen the recording yet but plan to tonight. Dunno if it's because they're fans of Tom Welling** but some seem to think he did a good job in directing. {shrugs} **Tom Welling is way too gorgeous and it's kinda sad that, when you have a 'hot' sibling, other family members are often placed in comparison--I can relate: sister as a pretty cheerleader and me as a bookworm. Mark Welling (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1732304/ ) may not have his brother, Tom's, model appearance (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0919991/ ) but he isn't 'ugly' as some have called him. So, it's somewhat interesting to see Tom Welling try a 'Hollywood' job where his looks aren't the primary force. > the time, I just figured it was just general Lexana awkwardness -- I I did see the scene where Lex tentatively kisses Lana and then Lana goes back for a longer kiss. Heh, if you gotta do a rebound relationship, a billionaire or heir to some serious $$$ isn't too bad. {g} > love the idea of them in theory, but for some reason I'm finding that > it squicks me a bit in practice -- but maybe it had to do with having > someone inexperienced "behind the wheel," so to speak. Again, I have to see this episode in full but I know I like the Lexana 'theory'. In the Flatliners wannabe episode, Void, even with the *second* warning from ghost!Lillian**, Lex continues making destructive decisions, so it's rather inevitable Lex/Lana will end and probably badly. However, it's the rather 'trainwreck' nature I find my curiosity in... Just like Lionel Luthor and Martha Kent or, as an HP slash fan, Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy or Harry and Snape. **Lillian reminds me of Lily Potter in the sense Lillian also had red hair, loved her son, and even from the dead, wanted to guide him, but I think that's where the similiarities may end. As to the episode(s) showing Lillian with dark hair, I'm in agreement she dyed her hair that color toward the end of her marriage because she didn't like her husband, Lionel, and he likes redheads. > Oh, but the Emma Watson girl was *great*. Much better than the real > thing, IMO, not that I don't love my Hermione. The way the tears just > welled up in her little eyes . . . I wish more actors could cry > convincing like that. :-) I think what struck me as being most memorable was this air of sorrow the 'Emma Watson' girl managed. I couldn't visualize Emma Watson as carrying that off because she's such a hopeful person and so is the character she portrays. > Dina, I'm curious to know if you've ever given Veronica Mars a try -- I keep missing the show. I've read the description and it does sound like a show I could jive with considering my past fancies: Star Trek (stopped watching on Voyager's last season), HBO's Oz (prison drama - series over), Homicide: Life on the Streets (same series creators as Oz and various Ozzies guest appeared... plus a psychotic Elijah Wood - series over), Law and Order: SVU (Oz actors in opening credits and guests - stopped watching around the time of Cabot ["bespeckled blonde" attorney] leaving), bit of Forensic Files (stopped watching), Six Feet Under (series over), Dead Like Me (series cancelled), Odyssey 5 (series cancelled), and Carnivale (not so much now). I tried watching Queer As Folk (US version) and the L Word and they didn't really float my boat. Murder/mystery/suspense has always been a favorite genre of mine. While sci-fi/fantasy is something I consider 'fun'. For example, catching some Xena or Stargate SG1 episodes. Though, I also like periodically watching Daily Show, Bill Maher on HBO, and Penn&Teller's Bullsh!t. I think Smallville is the only series I try to consistently catch now and I'm not really much of a series watcher in general. It'll probably lose my interest at some point but it's still 'sparkly' to me at this moment in time. Fandom is something of an ebb'n'flow situation. At one point while I was into Oz and LOTR, Smallville was the 'hot' fandom, and now, it's fallen out of favour. I believe Supernatural is the 'hot' fandom now with various HP folk dropping out of Harry Potter and into SPN. I recently caught commentary in an HP community where they were questioning how the 'old guard' seemed to be moving on while there was only one more book left. However, there's usually fresh blood always coming in. For example, Sorority Boys came out in 2002 and on the heels of Smallville being the 'hot' fandom. I saw it in 2005 and fell in love. I'm like many fans in that I can generate such enthusiasm for something I enjoy, but I also burn myself out faster and I start looking for something new. For me, it's seeing something and it figuratively 'clicking' for me. I've said this before but Smallville clinched itself when I saw Michael Rosenbaum exhausted, on the verge of tears and madness in the episode appropriately named, Shattered. Whereas, in the years before, I did catch snippets of Smallville but didn't get into the series. Oz was the only exception: I saw a couple fan vids and knew I wanted to see more of this series and learn how to vid. Songvids make for an interesting 'pimping' method. :-) I've missed flying out and going on a vacation/convention, and even though the economic future is uncertain, I'm planning on heading out to Chicago in August for a vidding convention, so I may end up hooked on another fandom. {g} > it seems like the kind of show you would like (oh, man, the HoYay), but HoYay? {g} Want to share details? > I've never seen you mention it. Seriously, you should give it a try -- it'll pretty much blow your mind. In Joss Whedon's words: Best. Show. Ever. The first snippet of Smallville I ever caught was of Lex speechifying to Clark in the barn after the shenanigans in "Talisman." I was just like, "Who is this bald dude, and why does everyone make such a fuss over him?" Little did I know. Losing interest." Weevil: "Well, if I thought you had the cojones to pull it off, I'd tell you, but . . ." Logan: "*Never* underestimate the size of my cojones." *winks* Logan's actor, Jason Dohring, is much like Michael Rosenbaum in that he has this intense chemistry with pretty much everyone and everything around him, so it makes for lots of yummy subtext. Which would rock. I *adore* the idea of Lana leaving Clark/Lex for another woman. Clark would just be in *complete* shock ("Lesbian?! What's a *lesbian*?!"), and Lex would be . . . well, probably in his bunk. ^_~ Hell, if I were Lana, I'd have been completely turned off of men by the end of S1 -- they always seem to go crazy and try to kill her, poor girl. Although, to be fair, sometimes the chicks do too (alla Tina). I'm actually watching "Cool" right now -- where Lex is trying to convince Clark to put the moves on Lana. Tonks: I agree. I would bet real money that the book date will be 7-7-7. that is a Saturday and the books always come out at midnight on Friday. And the movie is set for the following Friday, with the first show at midnight on Thursday. That has been given as the release date for the film. I think the ad people for both books and films realize that this is going to be the biggest time for HP and that everyone better jump on the bandwagon while they can. Interest in the films and merchandise, etc. might die off once the last book has been out awhile. So logically it makes sense to me. Then the paperback and the DVD can come out at Christmas. That will probably be the last of the release for any serious HP merchandise. Then it will be on the the next big thing for the ad people. Last weekend (the Easter weekend) I attended a games convention - Conquest - in Melbourne, Australia. This convention occurs each year and is a place for people to get together playing various games - most notably roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons, and wargames of various sorts. I've been attending this convention for fourteen years now, and I've been running games there since the late 1990s. For the last five conventions I have run roleplaying sessions set in the Harry Potter universe. As I did this year. And I've written up some notes on how things went this year, which I thought might interest some people here. First of all, yes, it was fun, but yes, it was also a *lot* of work. Not as much this year as in the past in some ways - this is the fifth consecutive year I have run a Harry Potter game at this convention and a lot of the material from previous years (mostly the maps I have made of different places, and the floorplans I've constructed on Hogwarts) remain useful and relevant, but I still had some prop making to do in advance. In particular for this year I created laminated character sheets describing each of the available characters (six this year - I create these sheets every year). Basically an image taken off the net, a 'blazer pocket' style badge - because a lot of people in Melbourne have been to, or at least know of schools based on British traditions, I play that up quite a bit in my games, so I had badge pockets made up with Quidditch colours and things - and a short description of the character. I also created statistics based on the D20 (D&D) game for each of the six characters and had to make up lots of those on paper for use in the game. The biggest prop I did this year though was a scrapbook of articles from the Daily Prophet - most of them were articles from the books but I had to write three of my own to bring the players up to date on events that have occurred since the end of Half-Blood Prince - this years game was set in the summer holidays between sixth and seventh years for Harry - so was obviously totally speculative - and I needed to have a way that people could know the major events of the game world... they were the fact that McG had been confirmed as Headmistress, Hogwarts would reopen, Arthur Weasley had been put in charge of magical law enforcement, and Dolores Umbridge had been put in charge of magical education and underage affairs and her first action had been to raise the Age of Majority to 18. I really had fun with that article. Hang on - I'll paste that one in. ***** AGE PARITY SHOCK In a shock move, the Minister for Educational Affairs and Underage Concerns, Mrs Dolores Umbridge today announced that, with immediate effect, the Age of Majority for Wizards and Witches has been increased from 17 to 18 years of age. This will effect all Wizards and Witches under the age of 18, even those 17 year olds who until now were considered to be of age. Mrs Umbridge stated that this decision has been taken out of a deep concern for the welfare of our children. "17 year olds may think they are adults, but my experiences as Headmistress of Hogwarts indicated to me that this was a serious mistake. This mistaken and indulgent view meant that I found myself unable to discipline two young men who were sorely in need of it, as they decided they were now old enough to decide for themselves whether or not they should continue their education." When it was pointed out to Mrs Umbridge that the Muggles also believe that children become adults at the age of 18, she stated that even Muggles have a sensible idea once or twice a century and it would be blatantly prejudicial not to do something just because Muggles do it. When asked how she would deal with the outrage of young Witches and Wizards about this decision, she said: "Don't you understand - the whole point of this decision is that we no longer have to listen to the outrage of a whole new group of young Witches and Wizards. This will make it much easier to introduce many other educational reforms - such as returning meaningful punishments to Hogwarts." Professor McGonagall, Headmistress of Hogwarts, declined to comment on these changes." ***** I had so much fun writing that. (-8 Anyway, that was the inititial preparation for the game. Now to the game itself. Actually not yet - I must tell you about the place the convention is held because it's really a very nice location to run a Harry Potter game. The Conquest convention is held at Melbourne High School - so it held at a school - and the school looks quite a bit like a castle. http://tinyurl.com/mgthe for anyone who wants to see a picture. It's quite cool running a Harry Potter game in that type of environment. OK - the game itself. I ran eight sessions of the game during the con (I think it was eight). I had between three and six players each session, with probably an average of around four or five - at a guess I ran it for between 35 and 40 people. Each session starts out the same, but because the game develops based on what the players do, each session is quite a bit different. I do have a loose plot and most groups stayed fairly close to it - but it differed quite a bit. The game was entitled 'Harry Potter and the Death of Magic' and the available characters were the six students who fought the battle in the Ministry of Magic at the end of 'Order of the Phoenix' - Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville and Luna. Harry, Ron, and Hermione were in all sessions, Ginny was the fourth character in sessions where I had four (it was easier to explain why she was there than for the other two) with Luna and Neville being interchangeable as the fifth and sixth characters. The game opened during the summer holidays with the assembled characters all being at Grimmauld Place. They were all moved here early in the summer holidays for their own protection - the Order is using it again. They have basically found themselves cleaning the house again, while it is being used for Order business - the Order has meetings a couple of times a week but the characters are more or less excluded from the meetings, despite their best efforts. Even though Harry has informed everyboy he's not going back to school, all the significant adults left in his life seem to be assuming he is going to. It's quite frustrating really - though Harry has had some indications from Mr Weasley and Lupin that they do have something for him to do, just not yet, and so far this has kept Harry reasonably co-operative (the fact that Mrs Weasley is hard to disobey also helps...) And the other characters have been going along with Harry. As the adventure begins, the characters have just read the latest issue of the Daily Prophet with the article I've quoted above. Basically I start the game by giving them the chance to interact in character about the article. The general way people played their characters was fairly much what you'd expect - a group of teens suddenly told that they are too immature to be trusted by a woman they also hate and despise... well, the reaction is spirited. Then I introduce the owls - an owl arrives for each of the PCs. Bearing a note from the Ministry. Informing them that they have an appointment with Umbridge the following morning. More time to react in outrage, anger and horror. And then when I want to move things along again - an announcement over the Wizarding Wireless Network. An emergency. A muggle train has somehow managed to get onto platform nine and three quarters at Kings Cross and has collided with the Hogwarts Express. All able-bodied wizards are to report to Kings Cross immediately to assist the ministry. All the charactes went in every session - and basically found themselves involved in a massive effort to obliviate the memories of all muggles so the Ministry could later modify their memories to maintain secrecy. A lot more than just that is required - the illusions and other spells that keep the platform secret have failed and need to be restored, but the Ministry in handling that - the characters basically are just assigned to basic first aid, triage, and memory wiping. Virtually every wizard and witch they have ever known is in the area - so from a gaming perspective, it was good because they could seek out people to ask questions - most tried to find out why Umbridge might want to see them. Most asked Professor McGonagall who didn't know but told them to be careful and to not provoke Umbridge. Eventually as the situation is brought under control they are told to go back to Grimmauld Place by Molly and to get dinner on because the Order is going to meet. They do so - they are excluded from the meeting (Fred and George are members of the Order now but the others are still too young). Most groups tried to spy on the meeting in some way - all failed. If they came up with a really good idea, I had it foiled by Fred and George. The meeting doesn't last long, but basically we move onto the following morning. The following morning they find Fred and George at breakfast looking rather annoyed - they are living at the shop now, but for some reason they seem to pop in for meals quite a bit (Molly's cooking!) and normally they are in a better mood. Especially seeing this is an especially wonderful breakfast. After breakfast it emerges why they are grumpy. They've been given an assignment by the Order - babysitting. They have to keep an eye on the characters. Their first task is to take them to the Ministry and it emerges that Fred and George have luxury cars. They are really moving up in the world and embracing some Muggle ideas (Arthur seems to have rubbed off on them). They take the characters to the Ministry and the characters go in for their meeting with Umbridge. Her secretary - fawning and obsequious - is Percy Weasley. A number of groups had some fun tormenting Percy. And then the part of the session that was normally the most fun for me (in some sessions, there were other great moments, but this was in every session). The meeting with Umbridge. I think I played Umbridge well. She greeted the characters by saying 'Good morning, my children' and playing up the fact that she is now minister with special responsibility for them. I played her in the most horrible chilling, nasty fashion I could - but also coming across as if she was actually pretending to be nice. "I would appreciate your help with my reforms at Hogwarts... it would be a shame to cancel all those OWLS, wouldn't it, Miss Granger?" Things like that. Really nasty, really evil, vicious, foul. And then just as I reach the peak - and hopefully I have the players seriously freaked out - her voice chances. "Wotcher, Harry." And her hair turns pink. I *loved* doing that! Loved it! Anyway, Tonks has now revealed herself (and has to deal with the characters) response, but ultimately she tells them she has a mission for them ("Don't tell Molly.") . The reason the illusion at Kings Cross failed is that magic is being disrupted near London - and they've traced the source to the Department of Mysteries. They think the problem started about the time that Sirius was killed, and they need to check it out - but they want to avoid introducing more variables into the environment, so it's best to use people who were there at that time ("But don't tell Molly!") So if the characters will go in ("Don't tell Molly.") that'd really be helpful. It shouldn't be dangerous ("But don't tell Molly.") but they can't be sure so they need to be careful ("And don't tell Molly.") If there is danger, they can call for help but at all costs they must keep Harry alive because he's so important ("And if you are going to die, call me, so I can die with you so I don't have to tell Molly!"). At this point, every session became somewhat different - because people could do what they liked. All identified the problem - some tried to solve it straight away, others returned to Hogwarts to research there - it was all quite different). Highlights... Well, I've already mentioned the Umbridge scene. Other good scenes that developed that were fun to play... Hermione asks how Fred and George's car drive themselves - given that they've just told her that the cars are too sensitive to use magic on. Fred and George become very evasive. Hermione discovers the house elf chauffers in the boot. Ginny has been using polyjuice potion to turn herself into a voluptuous stunning blonde of about twenty. Molly demands to know where the hair came from. "I got it from Fred's pillow." There's silence for a moment and just as Molly opens her mouth to begin making her views known, George throws a swinging punch at Fred. Neville asks what a taxi is and gets a very vague description. He finds a car that seems to fit and drives it back to Grimmauld Place (the concept of how taxis work should have been better explained. The concept of driving would have helped as well). Later that evening people watch on as the residents of 11 and 13 Grimmauld place try to explain the badly dented police car outside their houses. Harry's horror as (because the player wouldn't have Harry go to sleep and time was getting tight - I only had three hours for each session) he wakes up and realises Molly must have slipped a sleeping potion into the cocoa she gave him the previous night. That's not what inspires the horror though - he realises that somehow he is in his pyjamas. Harry suddenly realises that Pansy Parkinson is actually polyjuiced Draco - and lashes out with a punch to the chin. Hermione says "Harry, you can't hit a girl!" and Harry says "But it's Draco." Hermione lashes out with a second punch and then has to be restrained by everybody in the vicinity when she draws her wand. After a struggle, the fact that Pansy came into the prefects bathroom the previous night while Hermione was in there is revealed. At that point, Ron punches him. McGonagall finally arrives and Draco demands to be handed over to the Aurors for his own protection - but McGonagall speaks. "First of all, Mister Malfoy, we have something to discuss. Because letting Death Eaters into this school is definitely a violation of the school rules." Just a few of the fun highlights. As many of you know, Grade 1 of the Wizards' Ordinary Magic and Basic Aptitude Test (WOMBAT) was recently administered at JKR's website and those who sat the test can access their scores. If you haven't already, go to http://www.jkrowling.com/wombat/en/?lang=en or click on the WOMBAT student ID card at http://www.jkrowling.com and input your student ID. Though the List Elves are still going to continue to ask that all non-canon-related questions and comments about this JKR site event be posted here at OTC, we would like to explore the *text* of the 25 questions of WOMBAT at the Main list: ~ Does the WOMBAT Grade 1 add to or muck up our current understanding and interpretations of canon? ~ What can we infer from the text of the questions and answers? What are the implications? ~ Could such extrapolations be considered canon? Since the Wizarding Examinations Authority hasn't made the answer key to WOMBAT public, there's much fodder here for canon exploration in discussing the merits of the answers. After all, this is not just another straightforward Harry Potter trivia test with canon- obvious answers. So bring along your inspired intuition as well as your copies of canon as we apply what we currently know/understand of the wizarding world, deduce the correct answers, and/or make intelligent guesses. Normally, courtesy would have us use spoiler space, but seeing as the test is no longer being administered, no one is able to experience the test as intended by JKR any more. There is no longer anything to spoil. However, if reading the questions secondhand is not your cup of tea, please stop reading this post and be sure to avoid the posts at Main with the WOMBAT prefix. I greatly enjoyed last years account of the Role Playing group, though I admit I am thoroughly confused as to how it works (more on that later). This years account is even better. I also admire all the work you put into it, I sure, whether they know it or not, the players greatly appreciate your efforts. I love how you setup the story, then work in interesting plot twist and turns. It must make it so much easier and certainly more fun for the 'players' when you have so fully developed the world in which they must 'play'. I've been wondering since you made your Conquest report last year, exactly how these Role Playing Groups work? Do the characters move around the room like they are on a stage acting out their roles? Do they simply stand a recite their lines like a radio play? Do they all sit at a table and move little game pieces around? Or are they all sitting at computers playing with their on-line Avatars? I assume from what you said, that you play the role of transient characters; for example, McGonagall and Percy. From what you said last year, you also play the role of referee or moderator, you stop or redirect the game when it starts going astray or people try to introduce concepts that violate the Potterverse as we know it. While I find the idea of RPG fascinating, and despite my boundless ability to wildly speculate about the wizard world, and despite well over a 1,000 pages of fan fiction written, I don't think I would be very good at it. When I was in high school we used to play a party game in which we sat in a circle and one person would start a story which invariably began with 'One upon a time...' and rambled on from there. They would take it to a point and stop, and the next person in the circle would have to pick up the story from there. When they stopped, the next person would have to pick up the story and move it forward. I was alway the person who moved the story into wild, perverse, and illogical realms. Frequently jumping back to my own divergent storyline by simply saying 'meanehile back at the....'. Unsually, at some point, my own storyline became so divergent and perverse, that the game either ended in total frustration or I was thrown out of it. In any event, I really enjoyed your report of the events, and laughed out loud several times. Always great to hear from you. Sincerely (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), Yours without wax. Fortunately a lot of my players have run games themselves at Cons and so they do have some idea of how much work we put into it. Some people can be very annoying though and just don't turn to a session they've booked for putting me at a disadvantage and the other players if it takes the total below the number needed to run. Fortunately I didn't have to cancel any sessions for that reason this year, but it has been known. > I love how you setup the story, then work in interesting plot twist > and turns. It must make it so much easier and certainly more fun for > the 'players' when you have so fully developed the world in which they > must 'play'. Yes, and with Harry Potter - it's really good because people know the world too - a lot less set up is needed than some games where you have to explain everything. Everybody I ran it for had at least seen the movies so understood the basics. The only real issue was trying to explain Luna Lovegood to people who hadn't encountered her yet. > I've been wondering since you made your Conquest report last year, > exactly how these Role Playing Groups work? Do the characters move > around the room like they are on a stage acting out their roles? Do > they simply stand a recite their lines like a radio play? Do they all > sit at a table and move little game pieces around? Or are they all > sitting at computers playing with their on-line Avatars? The type of game I run is called a tabletop game. This involves all of us sitting around a table, and - well, basically I describe the environment the players are in. I tell them what they can see - what they can hear. What they can smell - I basically tell them everything they would know if they were actually in the location where the game is set. And then they tell me what they want to do. They talk to each other in character, discussing things and working out what they want to do and they describe to me what they are actually doing and I react to what they do. So - if for example, they say they open a door, I'll tell them what they see when they open the door. All the action takes place in the mind. We say what we are doing and we imagine it. There's rules that are designed to handle cases where someone tries to do something that they might not automatically be able to do. Every character is described by a series of statistics generated according to a particular set of rules... let me give you an example, using Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I use the D20 rules system for my games. This is probably the most used rules system around today, but there are plenty of others. The D20 system is best known in its incarnation of 'Dungeons and Dragons', the modern version of which (3.5) is an evolutionary descendent of the game going back to the early 1970s. It's called a D20 system because the most commonly used dice in this system is what gamers call a D20 - a twenty sided dice. Every character starts with a set of basic statistics - their basic characteristics. These are Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. These scores are typically between 3 and 18 - and the higher the score the better someone is at something. So in my game, Harry has the following scores: Strength: 15 Dexterity: 18 Constitution: 12 Intelligence: 15 Wisdom: 14 Charisma: 15 In English, Harry is fairly strong, very dextrous, healthy but nothing special, reasonably smart, reasonably wise, and quite likeable. Hermione, on the other hand had these stats: Strength: 14 Dexterity: 12 Constitution: 13 Intelligence: 18 Wisdom: 16 Charisma: 12 She's a little above average in Strength, average in Dexterity, healthy, extremely clever and very wise, and not unlikeable. Ron - Strength: 15 Dexterity: 16 Constitution: 16 Intelligence: 16 Wisdom: 12 Charisma: 13 Ron is fairly strong, reasonably dextrous, reasonably fit and healthy, pretty smart, fairly average when it comes to wisdom, and a likeable enough fellow. (Note - in most games, you'll have lower scores than these - for this game I assume the characters are potential heroes and give them scores that tend to the high side - I also use higher scores for adult characters - most D20 games assume the characters are mature adults - my Harry Potter game assumes they are children - but in this particular game, the characters are close to adulthood, so have high scores for that reason as well. Just in case any other D20 players reading this think my scores are very generous - adults in my D20 Harry Potter games have scores average around 15, with 20+ not being unheard of in their peak characteristics). This is just to give you an idea of how we use the numbers. There's also a whole range of skills that every character has available to them and again they have numbers assigned to them according to the rules - I won't go into all of them - because there's a lot, but for a few common examples... Ride Broom - Harry has a 10, Ron a 7, Hermione a 3. Research - Harry has a 2, Ron a 3, Hermione a 13 (the highest score in the game). The way these work is fairly simple. Say, these three characters are riding their brooms, being chased a group of Death Eaters. In an attempt to shake them off, all three dive suddenly to duck under a bridge. This is a somewhat tricky manouevre so I decide how difficult it is. In this case, I'd probably give it a difficulty value of 15. Each player has to roll a twenty sided dice and add their 'Ride Broom' score to it and get 15 or over. For Harry - he needs to roll a 5 or better on the 20 sided dice. He's likely to do that - a 80% chance. Ron needs to roll an 8 or better on the dice. A 65% chance - not bad. Hermione though will need to roll 12 or better. A 45% chance. It's starting to get difficult at this point. However, later on they are in the library trying to find out what really obscure potion they saw Snape brewing might be. I know that that's going to be very hard to find out. Difficulty of 25. Ron and Harry really can't find out - even if they roll a 20, their research rolls can't reach 25. Hermione with her research of 13 however - she'll need to roll a 12 again - a 45% chance. Basically we have these mechanisms to decide if the characters succeed when they try to do something difficult - so it's not just me deciding on a whim what happens. The dice can change things. And they did during the con. Hermione did a research roll and rolled a natural 20 - a 20 on the dice, highest possible result. I hadn't intended to tell them anything - but with that type of roll, I decided I had to give them *something* useful. It wasn't that much - but it was more than I would have just handed out. In the Harry Potter game, we didn't use game pieces on the table (referred to a miniatures) but it's not uncommon to use those in roleplaying games - particularly games that involve a lot of combat, where particular strategies or tactics may rely on knowing exactly where everyone is. This just wasn't that style of game. Table top is only one type of roleplaying. There are games where you do walk around a room actually playing your character acting out your role as you wish to do and other people playing other characters interact with you. These are actually a very common feature of Australian roleplaying conventions - they're referred to as freeforms and are regarded as Australia's major contribution to the hobby (freeforming was developed here in the early days of the hobby at early conventions). I play in freeforms reasonably often, but I've never written or run one. And there are ways you can use computers to run these games as well - a whole different ways of doing that, from running what is close to a tabletop game just using computers for certain tasks, right up to very immersive environments. > I assume from what you said, that you play the role of transient > characters; for example, McGonagall and Percy. From what you said last > year, you also play the role of referee or moderator, you stop or > redirect the game when it starts going astray or people try to > introduce concepts that violate the Potterverse as we know it. Yes, pretty much. Basically all the characters in the game are either PCs - Player Characters - where each player runs one character (in this game, the available PCs were Harry, Ron, Hermione, Luna, Neville, and Ginny) or NPCs - Non-Player Characters - who are run by the GamesMaster, or GM - the referee - me, for this game, when and as needed. Over the course of the convention, I can recall playing Umbridge, Tonks, Molly, Percy, Fred and George, Ginny (in a game where there was no PC Ginny), Arthur, McGonagall, Mrs Norris, a house elf named Wedge, Remus Lupin, Pansy Parkinson, Draco, Lucius Malfoy, the Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police, an employee of Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes, and probably some others I can't think off offhand. I also make decisions on how difficult things are, respond to PC actions, determine what happens, and if the game starts to lag because the players can't figure out what to do, I get them back on track - I have a 'plot of last resort' with my Harry Potter games - a plot I can impose on the game if the players haven't got any idea. I do this for con games, because we have limited time - I don't do it in regular games. > I was alway the person who moved the story into wild, perverse, and > illogical realms. Frequently jumping back to my own divergent > storyline by simply saying 'meanehile back at the....'. Unsually, at > some point, my own storyline became so divergent and perverse, that > the game either ended in total frustration or I was thrown out of it. Actually sound good to me (-8 Seriously the advantage of organised RPGs over what you describe is because they have a structure that prevents things getting out of control. If things diverge too much, the GM can bring it back on track by using the rules and mechanics of the game. > In any event, I really enjoyed your report of the events, and laughed > out loud several times. I'm not sure if this post was serious (100 house-elves? Harry Potter Week?), but I am touched by the general optimism on this list that we will get a book next year. As I recall, JKR has said that it will be hard for her to give up HP, and that the last book will be longest (mind, this was back before OOP expanded so much, IIRC) so I would not be in the least surprised if it's not published until 2008. I predict a Madam Pince moment lasting about 6 months during which the book will be essentially finished but JKR will not want to hand it over on the excuse that those last tweaks are not quite sorted out in her mind. Movie dates are IMO irrelevant since neither the publishers nor WB are likely to step aside for one another in the scramble for cash. I really want this last book to be really good, and I wouldn't want JKR rushing it. Plus, she's only really begun writing it in January, if it were to be out in July 2007, she would only have like 10 or 11 months to really write it (minus editing, artwork, production, etc). That's not a long time at all. Plus, I adore the films, and OOTP is slated to come out on July 13, 2007, and I wouldn't want the film to take away focus from the book or vice versa. I can be paitient for the book, because I know it will be worth it! Since my birthday was on Easter, everyone else was late in their gifts/visits, too. (Too much hassle to get plane reservations that weekend.) Had a wonderful trip to Northern Arizona on the 19th-21st, though, followed by a day trip to Mount Lemmon near Tucson on the 22nd--perfect weather for a picnic and a ride on the ski lift. Not a bit of birthday cake, alas, but I did get a half-slice of carrot cake for post-Easter dinner dessert. And income tax deadline was postponed till the 17th instead of the 15th, a birthday present in itself. Carol, who had to order her own copy of GoF on eBay because everyone insisted on giving her trips to pretty places instead of DVDs this year
