Hopefully PayPal will let you cancel the first claim (since you have them) and submit another one with the corrected claim. Contacting your credit card company is a great idea. Most bootlegs are at a lower quality for easier distributions. Some folk who buy the CDs recompress them to fit on iPods (to save room) and the like, so fitting a book or more than one onto a CD is definitely possible while maintaining reasonable audio. That makes perfect sense and I don't know why I didn't think of it myself. MP3 format is much smaller. I should consider doing that for long trips. I can borrow books on tape/cd from the library, convert them for my MP3 player so they are more portable. Thanks! I started reading it, as so many did, during the long wait between books four and five, out of a thirst for more Potter. I actually find I read less since book six came out, probably because so much of it is based on good Snape beliefs or because the ships are all not in canon. > Why do you continue to read (or write)fanfiction? I continue to read it because there are things I can find in fan fiction I can't find in the books now. I usually read AU fics with Sirius alive, or with Harry raised by Sirius now, but I still read a few fics based on the author's view of what will happen next or post Hogwarts stories or marauder fics. > What makes a good fanfic? Characters, plot and action. Also the subject matter, but that's directly related to what I want to read. I want Sirius alive, refuse to read anything AU which has Harry sorted into Slytherin or not friends with Ron and Hermione and won't read certain ships, such as Draco and Hermione. > Who are your top 5 fanfic authors and/or stories? Whew, that's a difficult choice. I love almost anything by Katling, especially Guild of the Night. Fate by Eowyn Jade, HP and the battle of wills, Resonance, Never alone, Never again and the promises trilogy by robin Lady. do you see a pattern? oh, I also loved After the End and Stealing Harry. I don't like the Sequel to stealing Harry because, as I said, it doesn't have Harry being friends with the Weasleys and Hermione. There are just some absolutes for me. Sigh. I realize you have had your meeting with the reporter, but I am always in hopes of finding new fics to read and curious about what others think and read, so I wanted to answer. sherry > From jeopardy18 at comcast.net Mon Dec 4 03:59:51 2006 From: jeopardy18 at comcast.net (seanmulligan2000) Date: Mon, 04 Dec 2006 03:59:51 -0000 Subject: Why did you start reading HP fanfiction and why do you continue? It's called Magic in Manila: A Free Harry Potter Festival for Children of All Ages. Kids and adults are urged to come in costume. This Saturday, December 9th from Noon - 4 p.m. at the Manila Community Center. To get to the Manila Community Center you take US - 101 to Eureka, from Eureka, you go to CA-255 North, and go over all the bridges over the beautiful water. Then you turn right on 255. Soon there will be a sign for Peninsula Blvd., turn left (you can only turn left) and take Peninsula Drive to the Center, 1611 Peninsula Drive, it's on the left. The event is sponsored by the Manila Community Center and 100 Fires Books (100Fires.com) Here's the scoop: There will be a free Hogwarts banquet for kids -- served around 3 p.m. Barbequed chicken, rice, salad, soup, bread, cookies, ice cream, coffee, cider...LOTS of food, and MCC does a wonderful job with its meals. There will be games for small children and some crafts throughout. The magician performance with Shantaram the Magician will be at 2 p.m. There will be Harry Potter quizzes throughout the day. Karen and I are generating about 500 quiz questions. We'll start with kids Kindergarten through 2nd grade, and then get older and older, ending with a set of FIENDISH questions that we hope no one will be able to answer. For the first four quizzes, there will be small prizes (J.K. Rowling's book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) If we have time, we will have discussions of such burning issues as -- Is Snape really evil, or Will Harry and Ginny get back together? What will Aunt Petunia do in the last book? There will be a free raffle -- children 8 grade and under eligible to enter for two refurbished Macintosh computers loaded with children's games and educational programs (no internet access). We may also be raffling off some new books. You wouldn't believe the wonderful sorting hat (about 3 foot high) that my partner made to hold the raffle tickets. There will be readings of the Harry Potter books. 100Fires Books (100fires.com) will be giving away used books for children, and will be selling a wide variety of social change oriented books for adults and children - as well as all the Harry Potter books, all the audio tapes and all the videotapes - and some great children's books (they are guaranteed to please, as they were selected by my own children). Message-ID: Project Ferret is at it again! To celebrate the beginning of its fourth year of existence, Project Ferret is holding a grand anniversary celebration and contest. Qualified writers (you must join the site and provide proof that you write reasonably well, understand syntax, punctuation and so forth) will be asked to compete in the collaborative story writing contest which starts Saturday, December 9th, 2006. A challenge will be issued, the parameters specified, and the members will vote for their favourite among the submitted entries. Each Round winner will receive their choice from the prizes shown in the official announcement, and that winning story will be the basis for the next Round of writing the following week. There will be three Rounds, with the final voting ending on December 29th, 2006. You say you aren't up for writing? Then join at the Stoat level. Stoats can read and comment on the stories submitted, and vote for favourites, which also makes them eligible to win a Harry Potter Journal at the end of the competition. Project Ferret grew from a fan fiction writing contest at Snitch Seeker in 2003. The founding members enjoyed the collaborative nature of that competition and went on to create a site where people could continue to assist each other and grow in their writing skills. It is a friendly community of Harry Potter fans, a place to chat and feel comfortable. The site guards its "general audience" rating-level, insuring no bad language or adult situations in any of the writing there. I know you've worked long and hard at this, and that you take the job of teaching very seriously. If anyone deserves it, it is certainly you. I also know you've had good and bad experiences in you own young education, so you can appreciate and empathize with any kids who are struggling for whatever reason. Don't lose that, because I think that, in the long run, is your greatest asset. You may not be able to 'save' them all, but take heart in the fact, that you can 'save' some. I love having the books on MP3. I don't know how to do any of that sort of thing but my son does. My next investment, after a new computer, is going to be a portable DVD player so I can take the movies with me. Since they're both safe, I can appreciate the humour of Lucky telling Pretty that she's a 'good girl' after having a temper at him. {chuckle} Lucky is a masochist. Pretty also picked up a Buddhist chant from my mom and even holds one foot up in front to mimic the traditional prayer hand position as she 'chants'. Lucky also picked up chanting in a week from hearing Pretty but he doesn't do the foot in the air... I've got two Buddhist birds. {quirks eyebrow} Dina From drednort at alphalink.com.au Tue Dec 19 12:39:15 2006 From: drednort at alphalink.com.au (Shaun Hately) Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2006 23:39:15 +1100 Subject: My thesis In-Reply-To: <1a2738400612181836x674cb0fbkc0b5d17d09373560@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <45887823.5425.2F08462@drednort.alphalink.com.au> If anyone would like to read the thesis I wrote to complete my B.Ed. degree, you can download it at: www.alphalink.com.au/~drednort/MyThesisBlackAndWhite.zip It's title is: "What boys and girls know and what they would like to know: Similarities and Differences." and it basically looks at a relatively minor part of the gender and education debate. It was unfortunately (in my view) somewhat limited by the strict format requirements for my course - some issues I would have liked to address couldn't be fitted into the word limits. But I still think it might interest some people. These guys are great and you can pick it up on the release date (whenever that is...)! [The reason I am sending this is because I went through an online source for both the American and British editions. Plus, look how worried he was about what Ron was going to do when he found out Harry even LIKED her. I think he'd be too afraid to disappoint one of them as they are all the family he has. Not to mention the fact that he is going to be too busy in book 7 trying to find the horcruxes to destroy V. He doesn't even want Ginny with them for fear she'll get hurt. It was written for children - no matter what they would like to be called, that is what they are. (-8 Sorry - a pet peeve of mine is the term 'Young Adult' when it comes to classifying fiction. 'Young Adult' books are aimed at 12 to 18 year olds - and except for the 18 year olds, they are *not* young adults. They are children. If that term *has* to be avoided out of a belief it is insulting, then the term adolescent or teen would be reasonable - but co-opting and corrupting the word adult in my view is a very bad idea, and a rather dishonest marketing ploy. Now, personally, I think, in general, children's books should be as free of swearing as possible. But like all general rules, there are exceptions and I have to say 'The curious incident' is, in my view, one of those exceptions. I can understand the book not being someone's cup of tea - I didn't particularly enjoy it, even though according to some experts, I'm an aspie myself - but the book is powerful and would be weakened if the language was changed. I've just recently completed my studies in the area of children's literature, and the Curious Incident is one of the books I focused on for a fairly large section of my course. What makes the Curious Incident a children's book is that it was deliberately marketed as such (which includes submission to children's magazines, and children's literature magazines for review), and Haddon at least initially seems to have viewed it as such. More recently he's started saying that it was an adult book from the start, but that doesn't match earlier statements he made. Because the book attracted almost instant attention from adults (including a number of prizes), his publisher and bookshops began to target the adult audience as well, so I'm not surprised you found the book in the regular fiction section. That's a marketing decision, which really has very little to do with the classification of the book. In contrast, 'A Spot of Bother' has been deliberately marketed right from the start as an adult book. Whether to classify a book as children's literature or adult is complicated at times. But the fact that Curious Incident was deliberately sent to journals that review and examine children's literature is to me a clear indication of intent. Young Adult is the term used in the industry, so there's nothing improper about using it - I just think it was a really bad choice for adoption. Personally, I think kids should be encouraged to be kids as long as possible. I think telling them that they are young adults is a mistake, it puts pressure on them to be too grown up too quickly, and makes them try and take on things they are not ready for. I'm all for kids trying to do things as they feel ready to do them - but I also want them to remain aware that they shouldn't expect to do it all, and that the adults in their lives are people they should go to when needed. Harry Potter could do with learning this lesson (-8 Seriously... for me, I like the scene in Order of the Phoenix, near the start when the Order is telling Harry, Ron, Hermione, Fred and George what is going on. They are telling them what they need to know - Lupin standing up for them. But Molly is still there, very much in mother role as well, working to protect them. You need that balance. I had it as a kid - and as an older kid too, with my schooling. I remember when I was 17, wanting to do something and my tutor telling me that she wouldn't stop me trying - but she'd be there to pick up the pieces if it went wrong, and I'd better come and tell her the instant it started to. (I also remember her complete and utter fury when I didn't...) The said release date is on 7/31/07 but Scholastic said they have not release any information about the date yet. It's just a rumor :-) Sherry: I would like that as a release date, because it's Harry's birthday, but it is a week day. I know there's no school because it's summer, but I doubt the publishers and marketers would want to release the book in the middle of the week. It could potentially hurt the sales, because people would have to work and all that. Sigh. It would be so appropriate to have it released on his birthday. I think, and hope others will correct me if I'm wrong, that it takes about 6 months from completed first draft manuscript to the book hitting the stores. Since JKR is still writing, that means /more than/ 6 months before the book appears. The first step is for the first draft manuscript to be submitted to Editors for proofreading, then sent back to the author for needed corrections. Then copies have to be sent to the various people who do art work (covers, chapter artwork, etc...). They need copies of the book so they have a framework for creating this art work. Then the materials have to be gather for printing. Then MANY millions of copies of the books have to be printed and distributed. All that takes time. If the manuscript were already done and submitted, I would be comfortable with a July delivery date. Since it is not, then I think more like 9 to 12 months. Which could easily make it around October. October seems a somewhat auspicious date as October seems to have been very significant to the story. I know we have some people in the publishing industry here in the group, could you comment on typical turn around time between the manuscript and availability in the story? Then > MANY millions of copies of the books have to be printed > and distributed. All that takes time. Carol responds: Oops, Sorry, Steve. You've forgotten copyediting! "Copy" is the manuscript form of a work; "proof" is the work set in print subject to further corrections. So, after a preliminary examination of the manuscript by the managing editor or project editor to make sure there are no major problems (say, unsuitable material for the target audience), the first step is to submit the manuscript to the copyeditor for copyediting (correcting all mechanical errors, revising any awkward or wordy sentences, querying anything that seems inconsistent or unclear). Then the author goes over the manuscript to accept or reject the copyeditor's corrections and act on the queries. After that, the manuscript is sent to the typesetter, who creates the proofs (loose pages that look like the pages of the book but are the size of typing paper and printed only on one side). The proofreader than reads the proofs against the copyedited manuscript to make sure that the editor's corrections have been made correctly and that the typesetter has made no further errors. Things like page numbers in the table of contents and running heads and fonts for chapter titles also have to be checked. The proofreader may make a few further editorial corrections, labeled as such, if the copyeditor has missed something or made an error. The author and the publisher also check the proofs and make their own corrections. All of these corrections are collated and checked, with pages submitted and resubmitted until everything is as perfect as humanly possible. Naturally, there will still be mistakes, but many eyes will have examined those pages before they go to the printer to be bound. (I forgot to mention people like book designers and illustrators and production editors who are also involved in the process, primarily at the manuscript level.) The printed books are then distributed for sale to the public. As Steve said, all this takes time, and six months from the author's final manuscript (I haven't included her own drafts and revisions in my discussion of the process) to completed book is a reasonable estimate. Lucky JKR doesn't even have to worry about the marketing! Carol, who is currently a copyeditor but has worked with books on various levels over years, including manuscript markup, proofreading, and incorporating author's and publisher's corrections, not to mention writing her own 637-page doctoral dissertation From elrond at paradise.net.nz Sat Dec 30 02:19:59 2006 From: elrond at paradise.net.nz (Michael Chance) Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2006 15:19:59 +1300 Subject: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Message-ID: <000b01c72bb9$02689160$c50cf6d2@paradise.net> In case anyone hasn't noticed, and I'm sure a lot of people have already :), it's possible to pre-order Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows from Amazon.co.uk. Certainly in Norway the translator has to wait until the official publication date before he has a manuscript to work with. I think the various non-English language publishers may benefit from this - as the books in the series tend to be released mid-summer, the translations tend to be released in time for Christmas. I looks likely to me that the English-language editions don't really need the extra pull of Christmas shopping-season, while for the translations it might be beneficial as relatives buy translated editions as Christmas-presents for family-members they know are Potter-fans. Certainly for me the only way I'd ever get a Norwegian translation of a Potter-book would be if somebody gave it to me as a gift - I wouldn't buy one myself, as I have read one, and was not particularly satisfied with some of the choices the translator made. Hey! Is that a slam against Americans?!!! Just teasing, Wolfie. Couldn't let that one go by without a little teasing. I wanted to say that reading the books has been very entertaining when it comes to learning some of the British terminology. Some things I already know from watching British shows (mostly PBS), but others you don't hear often so don't really learn them. Like "jumper". When I first read in one of the books about a "jumper", I thought "What the heck are the boys doing wearing jumpers?" In America, a jumper (as in clothing) is a skirt with a bibbed front and suspenders. Of course, I knew it had to be something else, but couldn't figure out what. It wasn't until much later that I figured out it was a sweater. Okay, NOW that makes sense! Of course, then there's the term "jumper cables", which is completely different. They are cables you use to hook up to your car battery. One of my favorite things in reading the books is the new terminology JKR comes up with in regards to the wizarding world ... especially when it is something that is close to what is in the mortal world. I love the word "Sugar Quills" and the "Wizarding Wireless Network" for the radio station.
