But being less venomously cruel to the ones he *dislikes* and less mildly cruel to ones he doesn't care about one way or the other... Julie now: I don't know about that. It depends on how *different* those circumstances were. What if Snape was raised by Dumbledore (say Snape's parents died, and Dumbledore is his great-uncle or something). So he doesn't experience what we assume to be unhappily married parents, as well as an abusive? disapproving father. He learns a different way of relating to people because of lifelong exposure to Dumbledore. He learns to wash his hair frequently and use an "anti-grease" charm on it. He starts Hogwarts not knowing 1001 Dark curses, not having spent a vast amount of time alone in his room, not being singled out as "ugly" (having silky, manageable tresses instead of greasy, slimy hanks of hair, yummm...) or weird (having at least a clue about the social niceties), thus he does not become the target and foe of the Mauraders, even if he is sorted into Slytherin. I'm not saying Snape would become a cheerful Dumbledore clone! He probably would still be a bit of a loner, and have a snarky way about him. But perhaps that snarkiness would be merely dry humor rather than cruelty. And presumably he'd have a better self-image, having been praised for his abilities and talents, thus easing his driving thirst for overt acknowledgement and recognition, and his intolerance for anything that diverts from his own perspective. While Snape's core personality might not change--he's introverted, intense, logical, orderly--how he expresses it *is* influenced by his youthful environment (I believe). It's that whole nature/nurture thing, and it's never just one or the other, but a combination of both. Dina Sherry Actually, if you're sighted, you'd learn to read braille with your eyes, not your fingers. At least, that's how all sighted people, teachers and transcribers i've known all my life read it. a sighted person's fingers haven't developed the sensitivity to distinguish the individual dots. I have on my MSN messenger screen name today, happy birthday, Louis Braille. thank you for giving me the gift of words! i am an avid reader and have been since a teacher first put my hands on a book in first grade, many years ago. Though most of my reading is done by audio now, Braille is still precious and the means of literacy in my life. if i love a book, or need to write a quick note, it's always braille i want. That's why, for instance, I have all the HP books on audio, but I also have them in braille and wish i could have every book i love in braille. thanks, Louis braille! sherry From bunniqula at gmail.com Thu Jan 5 19:52:00 2006 From: bunniqula at gmail.com (Dina Lerret) Date: Thu, 5 Jan 2006 14:52:00 -0500 Subject: Pork uterus, it's *not* what's for dinner Message-ID: <1a2738400601051152u370a00abh21dd0ba92ef8766b@mail.gmail.com> With my boss and his family doing the Greek Epiphany thing this week/weekend at Tarpon Springs ("Land O' Greek") because of a rare visit by some Archbishop, I wanna go do something too! Aye, usually. Though, sometimes, we had *attempted* ('attempted' being the keyword here {g}) to 'read' through touch and mostly failed. It was all part of some teachers 'expanding the youth of America's horizons'. {g} This was *years* ago. A friend from work picked sign language while she was in school and I was rather amused by the one for 'bullshit' (there are a couple variations): you close your middle three fingers and keep thumb and pinky up (bull's head) and then you flick your fingers from your other hand out on the elbow that makes up the "bull's end". After all this time, I remembered that and 'asshole'. {snort} Youth of America, indeed. > happy birthday, Louis Braille. thank you for giving me the gift of words! > > i am an avid reader and have been since a teacher first put my hands on a > book in first grade, many years ago. Cool beans! I remember awhile back you may have participated in a thread on 'reader software' like JAWS and whatnot. It looks like I will be having it the weekend of February 11-12. I've seen lots of things for kid's parties but nothing for adults. Let's see, I'm planning to play the different movie soundtracks in the background. The cake will have a phoenix on it as well as yet undetermined words. Not "In memoriam" or dates but something more lively. Maybe "nitwit, etc." from the first book. There will be a handmade blank book where people can write in their favorite Dumbledore quotes or stories. I started this a few years ago with just my favorite bits. Now I will encourage people to write in their own or write their comments around my own. Since the many of guests will be new to each other, I'll make nametags with wands stamped on them and dark purple borders. At this point, I'm going to look at the HP children's party menus and look at how I can change them for adults. I think the decorations will be purple and black, with lots of wands and phoenixes. I'm thinking about making armbands with his name and dates on them, but I'm not sure. There will be a black and purple wreath on the front door. Everyone will be asked to tell their favorite story about him. It would be great to have a sorting hat in the living room and a portrait in the entry way! Thanks for asking. Nice as a $2200 30" monitor might be, you can buy 17" Flat LCD monitors from Dell for less that $250. There is a local dealer who has Acer 17" LCD monitors for $200. In fact, 17" LCD monitors are so cheap, this dealer doesn't even bother with 15". So, while it is nice to dream, why struggle with two small heavy CRT monitors when you can have a 17" LCD for $230 or a 19" LCD for only $260. That's not exacly pocket change, but it's still very reasonable. Just passing it along. I upgrade the towers because I run out of room or the software require more RAM, a different OS, etc, but the monitor still does the job and I don't need to move them. While it would be cool, I can't justify something that's more into the 'want' spectrum. I need to retire my all-purpose Gateway from 2000 to light duties because its system is stalling and slowing down and my Athlon from 2002 does this odd reboot, especially when hooked up to the internet, which happens rarely but the fact it happens at all bugs me, so I'm keeping it as an offline editing computer--it was custom built to be that. It's so nice to be able to carry them along wherever I go, because I use the braille note for work, and appointments and various other things. For others on the list, a pac Mate, or a braille note, are PDA's for the blind, quite a bit bigger than a regular one, but still smaller than a traditional lap top. they have speech and refreshable braille displays. A refreshable braille display is a line of cells that display braille dots, showing what is on the screen, if it's attached to a regular PC. one of these PDA devices for the blind does not have a screen, but the concept is the same. hard to explain, I think. There are a lot of ideas I can incorporate too. I have a blackboard I can use for Transfiguration (it currently lets people know that it is the 12th Day of Christmas). I have a pack of green pens and a bag of feathers I can turn into quills. Making magic books is certainly easy plus I already have a box of books and bottles I use to decorate for Halloween (for example, I remove the labels from bottles of cranberry juice and replace them with one that say "Dragon's Heart Blood." Apple juice becomes "Acromantula Venom," etc. There are canning jars filled with large plastic lizard tails, plastic bones, etc, and appropriately labeled too. Hmm, I'd better bring out all the skeletons too. Those are mostly models such as The Visible Woman, the Visible Horse, Bat, etc. On the inside of one of my kitchen cupboards is a sign that I made that hangs year-round: Madame Pomfrey says "A clean cauldron keeps a potion from becoming a poison." It has a small picture of Madame Pomfrey on it too. Not strictly true as that sign was in the hospital but I am sure Madam Pomfrey agrees. I'd like to make up more signs like that, both for our school nurse, who is a HP fan, but for me too! Any ideas would be appreciated. I've been wanting to sponge paint a stone wall pattern on my living room wall for some time now. I wonder if I could get it done before the party? However, Vanilla Cream Soda is a good substitute, and there are a couple places on the internet when you can get labels to paste on soda (or beer) to turn it into butterbeer. At this costume website, they scanned the labels from two different brands of vanilla creme soda and edited them in a graphics program to make butterbeer labels. They are very very nice. http://www.costumes.org/tara/1pages/harrypotterbeer.htm Here is a butterbeer label (very basic) that was made from scratch in a graphics program. http://www.jedigurl.com/hp/ButterbeerLabel If nothing else this might give you some ideas. Also, to make a tollerable Butterbeer, add a few drops of butterscotch flavoring to Sprite/7Up, ginger ale, root beer, or vanilla creme. The butterscotch flavoring can either be ice cream topping, or concentrated flavoring from the bakery section of your grocery store. Though I think you wil find, a little flavoring goes a long way. Despite how great the books make it sound, butterscotch soda is not really that appealing. Just a few thoughts. I'm thinking that his taste for cruelty is innate, and the difference would be that he would feel motivated to partially suppress it for ordinary politeness's sake rather than being fueled by constant rage and hatred to use it to the max. I could be wrong, or your 'dry humor rather than cruelty' could be the same as my 'less cruel'. > (thinking Tom Riddle would have been a different person too, if he'd > grown up in the Weasley family, for example) I think Rowling did a good, if unintended, job of depicting little Tommy Riddle as a child who was BORN a sociopath, i.e. with something physical about his brain that made him unable to care about anyone but himself. Presumably it was his childhood sense that he had been abandoned and was being mistreated that caused being feared and killing people to become his goals, instead of something normal like collecting a harem of beautiful lovers. That made more sense to me when I thought he had been raised in some unpleasant Dickensian orphanage where discontented staff members took out their bad moods on the children (e.g. by beating them). But the Pensieve in HBP showed that the orphanage where TMR was raised was a well-intended place, where the matron was warm-hearted altho' alcoholic, children were allowed to have toys and even some pets (the ill-fated bunny) of their own, and the annual outing was intended to be fun for the children (a trip to the seaside) rather than scare them straight (such as visiting a prison or a madhouse to see what dreadful fate awaited them if they kept talking back to staff members). So it is less clear to me that having been brought up in a family would have made a difference in how he turned out. As a baby, he should have been picked up and cuddled and loved. The nursemaids would have done so, except he was an off-putting strange child who never cried and didn't like being cuddled. I think that could be off-putting to a parent, too, especially a parent who's already busy with a flock of other small children. We know that mother and child share (to some extent) a common body chemistry while the baby is still in the womb. Depression causes certain chemical reations in the body; changes in neurotransmiters, hormonal imbalances, etc.... I really think part of Tom's problem is that while he developed in the womb, that state of morose dark melacholy depression was conditioned into him as 'normal'. From that point on, Tom has been fighting a state of depression and probably paranoia and likely a subconscious sense of guilt that has colored his entire life. However, if he had been conceived in a happy home, he would not have had that residual chronic depression conditioning his pre-birth developement, and he likely would have been a happy normal baby boy. Still may have been a bit Slytherin-ish, but that in itself is not a crime, and indeed is not even bad. I guess I can't prove it true, but the indication are there. For example, the fact that he did not fuss or cry as an infant. That tells me, he is carrying the same dark emptiness and sense of failure and unworthiness that Merope carried. It's just a thought. (Draco was wished a happy birthday last June; I'm guessing he will be again because Snape was. Will he turn against Voldemort (as Snape, I believe, did long ago)? Among the gifted community - that is, those people involved with the support of gifted children - it's become reasonably common to refer to those who don't seem to understand giftedness and who wind up opposing the needs of gifted children as 'Muggles'. Other people object to this. The Harry Potter books took off among gifted children, and became rampant in the gifted community slightly before (only a few months before) they became mainstream - and that was for two reasons, really. One - Hermione - people in the gifted community are always looking for kids books with clearly intellectually gifted characters - especially girls. Two - many people do see parallels between concepts in Harry Potter and things that many gifted children have to go through. So adopting a lot of the language isn't that surprising really. Almost every Disney movie has some type of "Magic" in it and it really gets me when people say they're different and so you can't compare. I've never really thought of 'Potterspeak' being anything different, probably because I am British born and bred. We say Merry Christmas too, but it is interchangeable with Happy Christmas. 'Bloody hell' is quite a common phrase, and is really quite tame compared to other terms we could use - do you lot the other side of the Atlantic prefix 'hell' with any other words like we do? As a child saying 'bloody' was a bit risque and left you giggling when anyone referred to a 'bloody Mary' or a 'bloody battle'. 'Git' is a wonderful, and again fairly tame word; in fact it was one of my son's first words and has always been a term of affection between him and my dad - 'fat git', 'old git', 'stubborn git' etc etc I think Jo has said that before that she is not allowed to let her characters swear, and so the use of the above terms shows how commonplace they are - they are not considered to be swearing, just perhaps a bit naughty. I think it's especially fun because you can swear ("bloody!") and no one realizes it here in the US. And if you read fanfiction, that also goes for "bugger", and "sod off". "A good snog" sounds better than "a good kiss". Again, if you read fanfiction, "shag" is a good euphemism too. But, this is from someone who could probably be persuaded to leave her husband and family just because someone had a good British accent. I'm a gonner for that...... just kidding! I do admit I wished my son a very Harry Christmas! (but that is because his name is Harry too, though NOT for Harry Potter.) Many moons before HP I was mistaken for a Brit by my way of speaking. Too much British comedy and PBS/BBC watching, combined with a musical ear, I suppose! And my Dad, who is the one who got me into HP, was delighted with his Griffendor tie last Christmas, as those are also his college colors. (I got a Ravenclaw scarf for myself as they are MY college colors!) But he knew it was a HP tie. I've often wished for a house elf- if only to find my keys for me! Yes, it seems somehow appropriate to me for any group that doesn't seem to know what is going on in a particular field. http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/pg_cult.htm might amuse some people. PG - in the sense of that page - refers to 'profoundly gifted' - this is not just the ordinary areas of the gifted community but the much more out there areas. K: I think this is definitely book 7. And I think that it's probably gonna be Hagrid who bites it. Also, consider that she's doing press, and she WANTS us all to be up in arms. It could be anyone. Seriously, maybe Neil is a big fan of Percy Weasley. As far as deaths go, I'd bet the following: 1. Hagrid 2. Hedwig 3. Flitwick 4. Charlie Weasley Her pattern in creating conflict seems to be: 1 major shocking death. For this I vote Hagrid; book 6 was DD. Hagrid is still a major character but one who has lost his narrative neccessity. Why is he still hanging around? So she can drop some Glaswegian dialect from time to time? No, because she knew she needed him to die in Seven. 1 Personally-affecting Harry loss. For this I vote Hedwig; we haven't had such a thing since the Nimbus was decimated. Instead we've had major fights with either Ron or Hermione. Now that the fighting with Ron and/or Hermione is done to death, we're back to Hedwig. She can't structurally give him another broomstick loss without looking tired. So bye-bye Hedwig. 1 Total screwup at Hogwarts. We've had DADA teachers who were crazy, Divination teachers who were useless or obscure, Hagrid's many absences and the death of DD. So now we've got to muck about with the school a bit. Flitwick is the charms teacher. I predict Harry's growing closer to Flitwick as he learns more about his mother's prowess in Charms--only to have Flitwick bite it in the end. 1 Rocking of the Weasley boat. The Weasleys are Harry's surrogate family. There needs to be some conflict there. First it was "they're broke." Then it was "Percy is an Ass." Then it was "Percy is An Ass on the Wrong Side." Then it was "Bill's been bitten by Greyback." This time someone's gonna die. Could be anyone--how sadistic is Rowling? If she were smart she'd axe Charlie--he's outlived his purpose, since I doubt we'll need any more dragons disposed of or dealt with. If she were middling cruel she'd send one (or both) twins to their mortal end. But that kills her biggest tool for comic relief, so I can't see her doing that. Besides, the joke shop is a dead-useful source of material. It'll also give the gang a place to serve as their Diagon Alley Safe Haven now that the Leaky Cauldron is compromised. If she wants to be really mean as a snake (ha!) she'll kill Arthur. Harry already has one Patron--James. Arthur is secondary in his psychological needs. But, I'm betting she'll get her big bang from Hagrid, so Charlie is her Weasley Sacrifice. Katherine (a writer trying to look at it from a writer's perspective.) That doesn't mean he has part of Voldemorts soul, which is required for a horcrux. I believe if he did have part of voldemorts soul, wouldn't he be more meaner? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Marie Flynn" To: Sent: Friday, January 13, 2006 9:08 AM Subject: Re: [HPFGU-OTChatter] Wondering about something can volde kill harry? > Interesting question. I am quite often heard saying things like, "Accio car keys", "Reparo" to a broken glass or "Scourgify (sp?" to my soap-scummy bath tub. Why just the other day my 11 year old son was on a verbal rant, telling me that I never listen to him and don't understand anything when I calmly pointed at him and said, "Langlock". It worked. He rolled his eyes, shook his head side to side and walked away. I also use expressions like, "The cat's among the pixies" or "No use crying over spilled potion". Not only is it fun (for me anyway), but I often find it works well to break tension, calm nerves or when I just want to torture my children. They call me "Harry Potter obsessed". BTW, we got HP Scene-it for christmas. We have played twice and I have lost both times. I don't think I will ever get over it! Most of my friends, especially when they were younger, were poor, so spending money on trinkets wasn't common. What they would do whenever the went to a new place was pick up a rock or pebble off the ground. That way they always had a piece of the place they had visited with them. Example, when I was in the Florida Keys I went to a coral beach scraped up a few piece of coral and some sea water and sealed it in a jar. After many many years, I still have that coral and sea water sealed in a jar on my mantle piece. If if you would prefer some trinket, the rock is still not a bad idea. The price is certainly right. Though, this reminds me of complaints against folk pocketing pieces of the Great Wall in China and it being discouraged. However, with the beach, the ocean washes up and takes away stuff all the time. I'd have to agree with a friend's choice in requesting autumn leaves from northern trees. She taped them to her office wall and they were quite pretty with the different colors. Also, pictures are good, especially if the grounds are different from where you live. Going to have to remember that one. [Lee]: Well, life's about learning, ain't it? That's what makes it fun. Okay, granted, things may get a bit lost when blind folk are watching movies and TV; we rely heavily on dialog, good soundtrack (emphasis on "good," as in the beautifully constructed music of greats like John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, etc.), and, if we're lucky, good descriptions. Of course, if that last is not available, then it's up to our brains to fill in the gaps through the dialog and music. Like I said, seeing is an art. I still can't watch "Somewhere In Time" without crying...and that Stargate DVD...well, I just happened to watch two of my mostest favorite eps that always do me in, and I had Art describing stuff for me last night for the first time while watching them...and I was done in even more. Hey, hope all this rambling helps. Asking questions is good; very good. :-) How about all the sighted people on the list throw in a copy of SS and close your eyes and go through it...no cheating! It would be interesting to hear your impressions of the movie "seeing" without eyes. I pick SS because it has the most dialog and is the easiest to follow. Happy seeing, y'all; I'm back to the basement to finish up a Barbershop learning tape for Art which, IMHO, is gonna be a nightmare because of some--uh--sloppiness on the original recordings. Case in point with Sorority Boys: I rented the DVD, made a copy (yeah, unauthorized), and ended up loving the movie, so bought a [used] DVD. While box office, dude, I've never seen a movie more than once in the theater, so they're not losing money from me on that. If WB is losing money on me, it's because I haven't bought the Smallville DVDs. Err... I don't really watch the episodes; it's more a case of fast-forwarding for clip scenes, but I could've also recorded the episodes from TV since both ABC family and WB network air them every day. To combine emails, RE: Last night's episode of Smallville, 'Lockdown': Heh, speaking of Smallville, as a slasher, I was highly amused by this exchange: [[ Lex: You think I would look better with hair? Lana: I don't know, I've never thought about it. Lex: I have. I've thought about a lot of things... Clark has nice hair. ]] Almost as bad as when Lex showed his fiance, Helen, his 'secret' room filled with oversized images of Clark. There's a slashy TV thread on FictionAlley where some folk talked about Clark/Lex in Smallville and the person brought up a Rosenbaum quote where he basically said Tom Welling only had to stand there to look sexy. {chuckle} Dina From sweetnightingale at sbcglobal.net Fri Jan 20 11:31:31 2006 From: sweetnightingale at sbcglobal.net (Sharon Hawkinson) Date: Fri, 20 Jan 2006 05:31:31 -0600 Subject: Blindness WAS Harry Potter Movie References: <001f01c61d6f$e97608c0$65a4a8c0@rosie> <016a01c61d9d$8216ef90$6601a8c0@cauldron1> Message-ID: <04e101c61db5$0fa25220$210110ac@621B10B> > [Lee]: > Funny? I thought I'd have a bit of fun by going through it point by point to see how Lord Voldemort compares. Hey, I'm a geek, I love lists! Since the EO list is mostly SF themed, it doesn't always quite fit, but I've tried to keep more to the spirit than the letter. http://www.eviloverlord.com/lists/overlord.html ** Has already caused problems** 6.I will not gloat over my enemies' predicament before killing them. Jan: Voldemort has a big problem with this. 7. When I've captured my adversary and he says, "Look, before you kill me, will you at least tell me what this is all about?" I'll say, "No." and shoot him. No, on second thought I'll shoot him then say "No." Jan: ALL villains in Harry Potter have a big problem with this. 21. I will hire a talented fashion designer to create original uniforms for my Legions of Terror, as opposed to some cheap knock- offs that make them look like Nazi stormtroopers, Roman footsoldiers, or savage Mongol hordes. All were eventually defeated and I want my troops to have a more positive mind-set. Jan: Death Eaters == KKK (at least in the movies) 5. The artifact which is the source of my power will not be kept on the Mountain of Despair beyond the River of Fire guarded by the Dragons of Eternity. It will be in my safe-deposit box. The same applies to the object which is my one weakness. Jan: The horcruxes. Sometimes Voldemort seems to follow this good advice (the diary was essentially in Lucius Malfoy's safe and would have remained undiscovered if Malfoy hadn't been an idiot), but the locket probably fell victim to this error. 23. I will keep a special cache of low-tech weapons and train my troops in their use. That way -- even if the heroes manage to neutralize my power generator and/or render the standard-issue energy weapons useless -- my troops will not be overrun by a handful of savages armed with spears and rocks. Jan: I think both sides could benefit from a few conventional weapons. Even if guns would not work in magical fields, knives, swords or crossbows ought to. If Voldemort had cut Harry's throat in the graveyard, no amount of motherly love would have helped him there. 34. I will not turn into a snake. It never helps. Jan: Voldemort should pay careful attention to this one. 39. If I absolutely must ride into battle, I will certainly not ride at the forefront of my Legions of Terror, nor will I seek out my opposite number among his army. Jan: Voldemort certainly looked like a big idiot after losing to Harry in the graveyard. 56. My Legions of Terror will be trained in basic marksmanship. Any who cannot learn to hit a man-sized target at 10 meters will be used for target practice. Jan: The battle at the ministry. 78. I will not tell my Legions of Terror "And he must be taken alive!" The command will be "And try to take him alive if it is reasonably practical." Jan: Sure, it looks bad that Voldemort cannot kill Harry on his own. But it looks even worse that Harry is still running around as a focal point for the good guys. ** Might well cause problems in the future ** 1. My Legions of Terror will have helmets with clear plexiglass visors, not face-concealing ones. Jan: It seems like the skull masks might actually serve the useful function of ensuring that treacherous Death Eaters can only rat out a certain proportion of the organisation at once. However, it could still allow the good guys a useful disguise if they need to sneak into Death Eater HQ at some point. 42. When I capture the hero, I will make sure I also get his dog, monkey, ferret, or whatever sickeningly cute little animal capable of untying ropes and filching keys happens to follow him around. Jan: Fawkes, Hedwig, Crookshanks ... etc. 64. I will see a competent psychiatrist and get cured of all extremely unusual phobias and bizarre compulsive habits which could prove to be a disadvantage. Jan: Voldemort really needs to sort out his feelings of abandoment as a child. ** Further lists ** 101. I will not order my trusted lieutenant to kill the infant who is destined to overthrow me -- I'll do it myself. Jan: At least he tried. 104. My undercover agents will not have tattoos identifying them as members of my organization, nor will they be required to wear military boots or adhere to any other dress codes. Jan: The Dark Mark seems to be invisible most of the time, but you would have thought that there might be a spell to reveal it. 155. If I know of any heroes in the land, I will not under any circumstance kill their mentors, teachers, and/or best friends. Jan: It certainly motivates Harry. 201. All giant serpents acting as guardians in underground lakes will be fitted with sports goggles to prevent eye injuries. Jan: I think someone was reading Chamber of Secrets! Has this ever happened in any other stories? Jan From plungy116 at aol.com Fri Jan 20 20:44:55 2006 From: plungy116 at aol.com (Sarah Leigh ...) I have some Chloraseptic, but man, my throat *hurts*. I was outside doing some gardening (or my sorry attempt at gardening) and my throat suddenly felt sore within minutes of washing up. Don't think it's an allergy. I think it may be because I got sick but the body soreness could be associated with creating a trench in the ground, digging up concrete bricks to edge the 20+ foot trench for some flower bulbs (200 daffodil bulbs on sale for $14), and lifting/dumping about five to six 40 lbs dirt bags. I want something to eat and not ice cream. :-\ I want tofu but don't think my throat would like the 'required' soy sauce. I also want ramen noodles (my fav, Sapporo Ichiban), but again, not sure if my throat can handle it. Speaking of noodles, I just saw on the show, Extra, how it'd take 20x the amount Shirataki (?) noodles to equal regular pasta in calories and fat. Damn, I bet the stuff is expensive too... We managed to celebrate my birthday, after a fashion, at our local chamber of commerce annual dinner the night before my birthday last weekend, but I came down with a terrible throat and chest cold there, which's just now has improved enough that I can be out in public without people looking at me like I'm Typhoid Mary. Fortunately my hussband That sounds familiar. {g} My former job doesn't allow sick time, so my co-workers both had pink eye and I had the flu, which then settled into my lungs for weeks and I was coughing up blood for awhile but the upside being, as diseased as our department was, I never got pink eye. {g} One day, the other two gals called in sick and I was the only one left, and I got one of those 'sugar attacks' to the point I was going to pass out. I highy recommend it. It is much more character driven, rather than 'action' driven, than the previous books, although it does have it's far share of action. I mention this because I think there are some literary lesson in this book that spill over into the HP fandom. I don't want to mention specifics because I don't want to spoil the book for readers, but there are two key issues in this latest book that we have all pondered with regard to the Harry Potter Series. Being as vague as possible, they issues involve the ultimate fate of key characters, and where in the earthly and unearthly realm characters are allowed to successfully go. While I enjoy all of the Bartimaeus books, "Ptolemy's Gate" I especially enjoyed. Again, it is more character drive, and the previous books laid the stage nicely for the key characters to come together in this books. I found the book enthralling and thoroughly captivating. More than any of the previous books, this was definitely a "can't put it down" book. (as many sleepless late night readings will atest.) We also get to see more of the internal emotional lives of the key characters and indeed learn the details of Bartimaeus's past which is a very sad and emotional story. I highly recommend the latest book and the complete series to anyone who might be interested in the type of reading. For me the true test of the quality of a book is whether the main characters FIGURATIVELY die on the last page, or whether they live on in my mind. In this book, the key characters do live on. I had no trouble after reading the last page and closing the cover, imagining the future lives of each of the characters. When a book and it's characters are so realized that their lives spring from the pages and live on in my mind, that is truly magical literature. Just passing it along. Oh no, I know they would be bootleg and not worth the price of the DVD they were copied onto, what I meant was, is it really allowed on ebay? I know Jo (it seems strange to call a grown woman I don't actually know by her first name) JKR has had terrible problems with 'autographs' and signed copies of her books being flogged on ebay (flogged in the British sense, meaning sold, not flogged as in beaten!), and there doesn't seem to be a lot she can do about it. When I have looked further there are loads of people offering bootleg DVDs, some of which haven't even hit the cinemas in the UK yet. But who in their right minds buys this kind of cr at p which will surely be of terrible quality and probably feature various members of the audience coughing or getting up to the loo? [Lee]: Technically, no. The problem is that there isn't enough policing that goes on and also not enough people willing to report badnesses like forged autographs and pirate DVDs. If everyone began reporting things or questioning things, Ebay would have to do more policing, IMHO. As it is, they do what they can if something is brought to their attention...at least, this is how I understand it. The problem is that the dealer needs to be tracked down and hauled in because, even if Ebay shut him/her down, he/she/they could always change their name and account info and start all over again. As an aside, I once had a poster to the BSG list I moderated who was truly off-color. When I would send him private reprimands, he would post them with his commentary to the list. I banned him and, sure enough, I saw him come back with another account name, gloating over the fact that I could ban him as many times as I wanted but he'd always be able to come back...what a headache. I'm sure given the past sales of the previous DVDs Warner Brothers is confident that anyone who does have a bootleg, would want to see it with better quality and buy the DVD, if they didn't go see it in the theater. I'm sure given the past sales of the previous DVDs Warner Brothers is confident that anyone who does have a bootleg, would want to see it with better quality and buy the DVD, if they didn't go see it in the theater. Today, the Daily Telegraph newspaper has a preview of this item. Reader Tony let us know that it is the Black Family Tree, with a portion of the names showing in a photo. Readers will remember of course, that we learned of the tree as it was on the tapestry at Grimmauld Place in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. But for those of you haven't seen them yet, JKR draw a diagram of the Black Family Tree, for a charity auction. Two pictures from the front of the latest issue of the UK Telegraph can be found here - http://chance.slashcity.net/blackfamilytree.html One is a picture of the whole page, with the drawing by JKR on the top right, the 2nd picture is a close up of what is shown of the actual family tree. I've always been a bit miffed that I didn't go to Oxford or Cambridge (my first degree was at York and my doctorate was at Sussex) so this is such a treat for me. Apparently we start off in the Senior Combination Room for aperitifs and then move into the hall for dinner. Unfortunately I do not have a gown, but most of the people there will be in them. Corpus has a tradition of saying a long grace, ... in Latin! I cannot decide if I'm going to feel as if I'm at the high table in Hogwarts or whether I'll be keeping an eye out for Lyra peeking out of her cupboard hiding place. You can see the hall I think we'll be eating in if you pan left on this ( http://www.corpus.cam.ac.uk/about/virtualtour/02e.htm ) panorama of the Corpus Christi College New Court. Corpus Christi was founded in 1352. Wow, this is great. Kemper now: Dumbledad, please look for Lyra. If you see her, I would like you to ask her a question should the opportunity presents: why did she have to become such a weak female character in the last two book? I so liked her in the first book, she was spunky and strong. And then she meets a boy... lame ...I was so sad to see her change role from fighter to ...victim? That's not the right word, but she becomes the one who needs protection, and it's the boy who does the protecting. Lame. At least the books challenged religious dogma if not gender roles. Until then, I feel some disappointment; I thought it would be cute if the Black family arms was solid black, or at least a black image on a black background (which violates the color-on-metal/metal-on-color law of heraldry, but since when Dark Wizards care about laws?). Also, the astronomical naming thing. It perhaps came in with Ursula (Ursus Minor) Black nee Flint, whose son was named Arcturus (the bear-herder IIRC), but his sister Belvina and daughter Callidora and Charis aren't known to me as stars, constellations, planets, or moons. While I am still sort of wondering where this is going to go and if Bartimaeus can survive his current travails, I have sort of an inkling in the back of my mind as to where this might lead. The one thing I might add to your last sentence in the above paragraph is - at what cost? One can see in this whole series that there are various prices to pay for what people do (or don't do). For me the true test of the quality of a book is whether the main characters FIGURATIVELY die on the last page, or whether they live on in my mind. In this book, the key characters do live on. I had no trouble after reading the last page and closing the cover, imagining the future lives of each of the characters. > > When a book and it's characters are so realized that their lives > spring from the pages and live on in my mind, that is truly magical > literature. > > Just passing it along. > > Steve/bboyminn *****\(@@)/***** DMom: Steve, I am getting excited at finishing this book! It has been such a good read. It really pulls you into John Mandrake & Kitty's world. In some ways I was reminded of the Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell book but with a slightly different twist.
