  Hi All,

I cannot resist a quick gloat because I am sooooo excited about my dinner engagement tonight. My boss ( http://research.microsoft.com/~krw/ ) has just been made a Senior Member of High Table at Corpus Christi College in Cambridge UK. This means he can invite people along for dinner there, and he's taking me along as his first guest! I've always been a bit miffed that I didn't go to Oxford or Cambridge (my first degree was at York and my doctorate was at Sussex) so this is such a treat for me. Apparently we start off in the Senior Combination Room for aperitifs and then move into the hall for dinner. Unfortunately I do not have a gown, but most of the people there will be in them. Corpus has a tradition of saying a long grace, ... in Latin! I cannot decide if I'm going to feel as if I'm at the high table in Hogwarts or whether I'll be keeping an eye out for Lyra peeking out of her cupboard hiding place. You can see the hall I think we'll be eating in if you pan left on this (
http://www.corpus.cam.ac.uk/about/virtualtour/02e.htm ) panorama of the Corpus Christi College New Court. Corpus Christi was founded in 1352. Wow, this is great.

  Kemper now:
Dumbledad, please look for Lyra. If you see her, I would like you to ask her a question should the opportunity presents: why did she have to become such a weak female character in the last two book? I so liked her in the first book, she was spunky and strong. And then she meets a boy... lame ...I was so sad to see her change role from fighter to ...victim? That's not the right word, but she becomes the one who needs protection, and it's the boy who does the protecting. Lame. At least the books challenged religious dogma if not gender roles.

  Kemper,
  Hoping dinner was delicious
