As was mentioned, Phoenix Rising will be May 17-21, 2007, in New
Orleans--in fact, in the French Quarter. (It's more than ready for
conventions!) We'll be taking over the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel for
five days of programming, from lectures to workshops and from panels
to intimate roundtable discussions. There will also be a Quidditch
tournament, a traditional New Orleans-style masquerade ball, an
Artists and Authors Night that showcases all sorts of creative fan
endeavors, a big event on a Bourbon Street balcony, the chance to
share your favorite memories on our Remembrall Wall, and lots of other
programs and special events.
We've also got some fabulous guests coming, like Tim Ditlow (publisher
of the audiobooks), Henry Jenkins (a media scholar who's studied HP
fans), Danny Bilson (Hollywood producer and VP of Intellectual
Property at EA Games, and worked with JKR to develop the HP video
games) and others. But maybe instead of being all excited I should
just point you to the Phoenix Rising website:

You're right, though, that traveling to go to conventions can be
expensive. To bring the cost down, I usually try to room with other
fans in a quad room, I try to get conference tickets at earlybird
rates, I watch for discounted air/bus/rail tickets or group rates and
cheaper fares, and I bring along snacks and water so that I don't burn
through money that way. Sometimes when I've been a presenter, my job
has agreed to pay for some of my expenses, too.
Does anybody else have some tips for low-cost travel? (I like to
collect them.)
:D Hallie
