When your digital camera becomes *shot*?

I purchased a used Sony Cybershot DSC... something. It's a five
megapixel bugger. Anyway, even though I bought it used in 2004, the
thing worked fine. I think the last time the camera was used was for
the Harry Potter HBP book release based on the pics left. So, yeah,
it's been about a year where it's been sitting "quietly" (or so I
thought). The lens automatically shutters a protective cover and no
excessive heat or humidity (or at least a home in Florida ranging
79-82^F) or magnetic exposure. Basically, nothing should've damaged
it for storage.

However, I powered the thing back up again yesterday and I've got this
large black bar and fuzzy white bar slightly shifting around (in a
pixelated sense) on the digital screen and the snapshots have a thick
black line going through them (doesn't matter if the screen is turned
on or off and I'm using the optical view). Am I missing something
simple?

Oh, it might be the DSC-P10
(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008O35W/002-9460266-9760821?v=glance&n=502394
). Yeah, 2003 was when the original owner bought it. Seems some folk
had their camera die sooner than others.
