I tried Nutella for the first time as an exchange student in
Germany in 1986. When I returned to the USA, I brought a container
of it home with me. No one here had ever heard of it prior to that
time.
Several years later, it became possible to find it in nearly any
grocery store, high-end or not.
I love nutella, especially on German Broetchen (like a bread
roll)... warm Broetchen with butter and nutella. It all brings back
such fond memories of breakfast in Germany.

[Now Tammy says: ] When I was eight, the Army sent my dad to Germany, and we
followed a short while later. He met us at the airport and took us to the
hotel, gave my mom a brand new jar of Nutella, and suggested that we might
like it. When Dad came back about two hours later, he said, "So, how about
some Nutella sandwiches?" Mom said, "Sure thing! Let's go get some
Nutella!" We'd eaten the whole thing with our fingers, since there wasn't
bread or a knife or spoon or anything! It was the beginning of a long and
wonderful relationship with Nutella! :-D
