But I had to come back and post about Second Life, which I discovered on Monday, 2/27/06 from reading a writer's* blog. (I've already rented an apartment there. For about twenty cents a week. Less than any resident's automatic "government" stipend. Weird.) www.secondlife.com Tweak yourself an avatar (young, thin, doe-eyed and possessing killer cheekbones, or muscle-bound with a full head of hair; chubby, a crone, even non-human--be a dragon) and walk, fly, or teleport over and around several square miles of virtual landscape. Buy land; build yourself a house. Make a product and sell it. Modify the landscape. Make mountains. Or just sign up for the free trial and meet people. Wander the woods. Dance. Talk. Fly through clouds. Wander one of several malls and buy virtual clothes, shoes, and whole visual personas for little...or nothing, if you troll for the incredible freebies available. Walk the ocean floor, which has little detail; come and build some fish and coral. It's like chat with ski lodge (or hot tub, or dance club) graphics and presence. There are even Groups there. Sardaukar. Furry Fandom. Art groups. BDSM. ("Mature content" being an optional check box on your radar.) Book clubs. But there's no Harry Potter I can find. And there should be. The things you could do with a wizard or witch avatar there...oh, man! Oh, man, talk about _magic_! It would be so perfect; and although I've acquired a hover disk, I haven't seen a single broomstick! And they are eminently doable, although my skills won't be up to it for a while. I'm told that technically, Second Life is a MMORPG: a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. But the rules are only those of any civilized, capitalist society. It's closer to a WORLD. There are also claims that some people are making a living doing stuff solely in cyberspace in Second Life. There are certainly many RL dollars changing hands via the exchange of Linden (Second Life) dollars (the rate is currently something like 233 Linden to one U.S. dollar). You do have to have broadband or something like it to do this, and a hefty chunk of RAM. (This is like *seeing* TBAY; and boy, it sucks up MB and BPS.) I hope to see (see!) some of you; and no, I have no real stake, financial or otherwise, in this, just a lot of raw enthusiasm and eagerness to see Witches and Wizards among the Furries and Vampires and Zombies and winged folks! It's kind of a joke. I thought it was funny =D) Dear Voters:? ??? For those of you who don't know, the official Harry Potter site is running a contest where first prize is a chance to go to England and meet the cast of the Harry Potter films. The contest winner will be determined by who gets the most votes. I, Vera F, feel that you should vote for me. I will outline the reasons as to why here:? 1: My name sounds foreign. 2: I have a lot of free time. . . so I could probably squeeze a trip to England into my schedule. 3: I have free cake. *points to a table with free cake* 4: . . . Cause I asked you to. Don't be difficult.? I would love to meet Dan, Emma, and Rupert. I think we would click so well. We'd be such good friends. I'm not actually Har- Vera: I can't wait to tell all my friends I met THE Harry Potter! Dan Radcliffe: Ah. . . I'm really more of an actor. . . Vera: Oh my god. . . remember that time you killed that giant snake?! Dan Radcliffe: That, that. . . that was a book. All I did was wave a sword in front of a green screen. Vera: It was the snake of Slytherin's heir himself! Dan Radcliffe: Um. . . Vera: Remember? It was all:? "ahhh! I'm a giant snake, and I'm going to rip your gizzard out! Dan Radcliffe: . . . The gizzard, huh? Vera: And you were all: "ahhh! I'm the boy who lived for crying out loud! I'll rip YOUR gizzard out, see if I don't." Dan Radcliffe: I think you're getting a little carried away. . . Vera: Then the snake lunged at you, and tried to bite your face off! Dan Radcliffe: Oh dear. . . Vera: So you gave him a right hook. Bam. Punched him right in the nose. Then you said: "that's how we roll up in private drive!" Dan Radcliffe: I don't seem to remember saying that. (Vera's eyes narrow) Vera: Wait a minute. You're not Harry Potter, you're an imposter! Imposter! Dan Radcliffe: No, no, I'm an actor. I'm Daniel Rad- (Vera dives at Dan Radcliffe's face, grabbing his hair in both hands, yanking.) Vera: Wig! Imposter! Wig! Come off you stupid wig. . . Dan Radcliffe: Oww! Dan Radcliffe has black hair too! Stop! Oh god it hurts!? ??? ? ??? Oh man. . . that would be a tad embarrassing. But you know, if I met them I might just freeze. Them being huge stars and all, it might make be a little nervous, and what if they decided to tease me?? ? Emma Watson: So you're a pretty big Harry Potter fan, I hear? Vera: Oh, yes. I love Harry potter. Rupert Grint: If you're such a big fan, tell me. . . what does Harry say to Hermione in the third book on page 153? Vera: Ah. . . Ah. . . Dan Radcliffe: In the Spanish edition of the third book, of course. Vera: . . . (Vera starts crying.) Emma Watson: Muggle. Rupert Grint: Muggle Dan Radcliffe: That muggle. Vera: Wahhh! (Vera cries hysterically.)? Or. . . ? Vera: Emma, you're so pretty. Emma Watson: Thank you. Vera: Am I as pretty as you? Emma Watson: Nope. Vera: Wahhh! (Vera cries some more.) ? ? Although, there's a good chance it could go like this too.? Vera: Marry me, Dan. Dan Radcliffe: Ok.? Shut up, it could!? So what are you waiting for? Vote Vera F! Just look at these real life testimonials from people who voted for me.? Mark Markson: I voted for Vera. I feel marginally more handsome now.? Bill Billson: I voted for Vera. It wasn't so bad.? And look at these interviews I did with others who voted for me.? Vera: How are you doing? Ralph Ralphson: Good, I lost 3 pounds this week. Vera: You voted for me, right? Ralph Ralphson: Yes, I did. Vera: So voting for me is probably what caused you to lose weight, right? Ralph Ralphson: No. . . I started a new diet, it's working out great. Vera: But. . . but voting for me might have been what did it, right? Ralph Ralpson: I think that's doubtful. Vera: But, it's not impossible, right? Ralph Ralphson: No, I suppose not. . .?? ? And this one with my campaign manager, Kevin . . .? Vera: So, you voted for me, right? Kevin: No. Vera: What?! You're my campaign manager! Kevin: Sod off. ? ? So as you can see, not only do I clearly deserve your votes, voting for me will also make you cooler, and physically more attractive. How could you vote for anyone but me? . . . Seriously, vote for me. Just follow this link, and type in VeraF789 for the person you want to vote for. You can vote for as many people as you want, too. So you can enter the contest yourself. The rest of the message is blah-blah-blah, so can be skipped. Above question is my priority. I did not give permission for this vid to be uploaded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYePWjnYyFA While the person who put it there meant so in a nice fashion, I don't want the vid there. Offhand, only one site has ever been given permission to host my vids elsewhere. My option is to contact Faychii but YouTube requires I create an account with them. Ugh, but I'll do it if necessary. As long as I have a good working website (site's been around for eight years and I just renewed the domain for another four years) and files are free to download for everybody and I don't mind direct links (please don't stream the file), I don't want to see my vids elsewhere. There is no reason for them to be uploaded elsewhere. If my website dies or I die and can't pay the hosting bills, *then* there's a reason. And then there's this from YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/t/dmca_policy Uh, I'm the vidder of copyrighted video and music... and I'm not the copyright holder. Good combination. {g} Other than Veritaserum, if there are bunniqula vids not hosted at archive.nu, they're not authorized uploads. I'm into making revisions because I'm a middle-range vidder and I always *require* improvements, so I'd rather not see multiple versions floating around. If I was given account access to alter my vids at any time and the webhost is solid and advertisement-free, then I'd consider other hosting options... That day has not arrived. Second Life has malls, casinos, dance clubs, private residences, museums, art galleries, wooded areas, mountains, apartments for rent, kiosks, and somewhere around 150,000 members (although much like HPfGU, only a fraction (4000+ today) are actively participating at any given time). All of the things that are already there (like the malls) were created by members. There are social groups that exist in Second Life as well that are drawn together by their mutual interests. Unless one of us Potterheads became a landowner, we'd be a roving band of whatever we are...but there's always a pleasant spot by a lake to hang out and talk. And no inclement weather. The virtual reality nature of the place means that flying and creating and reshaping objects (including oneself) are common--even expected. Script-building (for the more ept) means that you can animate just about anything to do just about anything. Sounds like magic to me. Starting a SL "group" within that world means that someone pays a fee and opens membership to anyone who wants to join; but at least three SL people have to accept (join for free) in 24 hours, or it becomes defunct before it even gets started. Once it's established, all Second Life members can then look up info on the group and its members and join if they want to. Members of the group have the option of being labeled with their group's name as well as their avatar's name, and the groups they belong to are reflected in their profiles (public documents with some info anyone can access). Second Life is all in real time, unlike a group like HPfGU. It's all chat all the time with whoever you know who is online (your friends' status is indicated) or whoever is in the same "geographical" area you are. Or you can hang a do not disturb sign out and go climb a mountain. ;-) It is confusing because we're talking about two different things: firstly, membership in Second Life (which Tammy and I and now Ceridwen and her daughter have and which other HPfGU members might like to check out). The second thing is an HP group I'd like to see started within the world of Second Life. I hope that's clearer. If you Google or Yahoo search Second Life, there's a lot of information available online, including articles written by people reporting on but not participating in the phenomenon. Sandy et al P.S. Warning: it's at least as addicting as any part of HP I've ever seen. Her "Fan Sites" trophy shelf is new, and in the "Rubbish Bin" there are some baby toys, Mackenzie's bib, and a small stuffed piggie. There is also a small pile of magnitized word magnets, that are movable, and a very old and gross looking cup of coffee. Oh yes, and the butterfly is now orange. Also, a list of how to access the easter eggs from MuggleNet reader Kenny (Warning: Spoilers obviously below if you want to figure out how to access them yourself): First, go into the "Extra Stuff" Section. Turn the radio off then on and wait a few seconds. Listen to the announcement, telling you to put 6 drops of red potion followed by three of the green potion on a plant. Now, leave and click on the Eraser Portkey on the desktop. It brings you to the mysterious door. Now, follow the instructions with the potion on the plant. Now you have another scrapbook piece, revealing around the time of Prisoner of Azkaban, genders of teachers and some attempts for hippogriff names. Now, go to the rubbish bin and move the mug four times in a clockwise circle. When you do that, stop, it forms a circle inside. Now leave and go to the extra stuff section, click on the card that says "Circle" with a circle on it. Now you have an original synopsis of "Philosopher's Stone." Next, go to the main page. On the phone, dial "31071965" (which happens to be Jo's birthday, 7/31/65). Now you have an early (around 1994) draft of Philosopher's Stone and information that Draco's surname used to be "Spungen." Next, go the "Extra Stuff" Section. Grab the pen and draw a lightning bolt on the extra piece of paper. You will get an unrevised portion of Order of the Phoenix. Go to the Fan Sites page. To the right, click on the small red box five times. It will open. Click the question mark bubble to get the same clue as the phone dialing one. I received my copy last weekend, read the first 8 essays so far, and it's wonderful! I found the first essay ("Harry Potter and the Young Man's Mistake") particularly enlightening, and "Hermione Granger and the Charge of Sexism" is a close second. One is about Snape's class and the other about Quirrell's and McGonagall's. You had me worried for a moment! (I already had the one from the book but not the one from the phone number/) Draco Spungen. Ugh! How fortunate that she changed it, not only because Malfoy means "bad faith" and is therefore appropriate, it just sounds much, much better. And character's names are part of the appeal of the book--one of the joys of reading the HP books, for me. And on another note (different clue/reward), did anyone notice that the fourth-year DADA teacher was originally going to be named Pettigrew? (I doubt that PP as we know him would have been teaching the class, though. I'm sure she just gave the name to a different character.) Of course, just becaure it isn't 'significant' doesn't mean it can't be symbolic. > Tonks: I think the SOWILU fit HP more than EIHWAZ. The process of Harry's adventures are bringing him to the place of wholeness. Like DD before him, Harry is being transformed into the Son. Han's is right. It is all about Alchemey. The HP series is about the transformation of a human being into the image and likeness of God. I don't usually read fiction. HP was the first book of fiction that I read in over 20 years. I see fiction as escapest and there are too many good nonfiction books and too little time to read them all. But when I had adults friends who wanted the books for Christmas and also heard that it had been banned in Mississippi or some such place, I went to the library and read the first book. It was while reading the part about Harry's scar that I realized what it was that I was reading. I said to myself "this is no ordinary children's book. This is a book with serious Christian symbolism. Wonder where the author is going with this?" And with that I have gone on the read the rest of the series and become a very obsessed fan. I see the scar as simular to the sign of the cross that is put on a Christian at their baptism. I also think that it is significant that the chapter with the scene of DD's murder is called "the lightning struck tower". This connects the events on the tower to the mark on Harry. Just as Jesus on the cross is connected to the sign of the cross. I think that there will be some connection to this parring and the last word in the last book. Scar. I'm sure all of you are familiar with Sherlock Holmes though perhaps not everyone on the list has read the stories and/or seen the series that Stared Jeremy Brett as the infamous sleuth. Now I challenge you all to write a crossover either literally or in some manner. There are two ways that are acceptable for this challenge, you can either do a time tavel fic with Harry going back in time and meeting Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson or they travel into the future somehow and meet Harry and gang. Or, you can write a story in which Harry is a sort of modern day Wizarding version of Sherlock Holmes. It can be set anywhere from shortly before Hogwarts to sometime after Hogwarts doesn't really matter much so long as Harry is the star of the fic and it has to have magic in it to some degree. Also bonus points to it being a series that follows Harry's adventures at Hogwarts as close to the books as possible and still have Harry be on the same/or higher level of intelligence as Holmes is suppose to possess. And het is fine but slash is a bonus. Well I think that about covers it. Good luck. Read ya l8r. I so did not expect to read about Harry Potter in the Russian book I was reading today on the subway. :) The book is one of those which I would call "read once and threw it away", but since I am uncapable of throwing books away, I call it "read it once and donate to the library" :) It is a fantasy/adventure about the people from the future who, I guess I could say hunt different monsters in the different centures. Yes, I think that describes the plot well. So, one of the monsters they are hunting is the spirit of the kid, who is very kin on revenge on the family of his mother, who abandoned him. Very bloodfirsty kid, I should say. This kid's familiar is snowy owl.... hehehe. Who eventually becomes his downfall, but before this owl tells the hunters how to vangush her boss, she complains that her sister, another snowy owl got muich better deal, because she gets to be the familiar of nice young wizard named Harry Potter. :) Hmmm. We will begin it around the time of the 4th book. I think it will be lots of fun if we do not use strict canon. So while the goblet of fire happened in the canon storyline, we can either use it and play it differently or just not go that route at all. It is open for discussion. If you have never role played before and want to get into it, I am willing to teach. We play on a board type set up and it is really easy to learn. Though I vaguely remember reading JKR saying that the shape of Harry's scar was not significant. Of course, just becaure it isn't 'significant' > doesn't mean it can't be symbolic. Carol responds: Actually, she said that the shape wasn't the *most* significant thing about the scar, not that it wasn't significant at all. I agree that the description of Eihwaz's symbolism sounds *exactly* like what Harry will be facing in Book 7, and I think it's significant that JKR specifically brought the eihwaz rune to our attention by having Hermione miss that question on her Ancient Runes OWL. I expected either Hermione or Luna to connect the scar to a rune in HBP, but HBP trampled on almost all my expectations, so naturally it didn't come through on that one, either. Still, there's hope for a scar/rune connection in Book 7, and the mere fact that an Ancient Runes book is one of the clues on her website fortifies that hope a bit, at least for me. And I'm sure that JKR had Hermione study the subject for a plot-related reason. As for the Potterverse number runes that the book actually displays (instead of the standard runes that Hermione apparently studied), I don't have a clue what that's about. I think it was just a bit of fun, a riddle for the kids to figure out and the grown ups to cheat on. (I did about half and half.) I feel badly, as I love chatting it up with my cool HP friends, even when I don't have much to say about Snape's actions or motives in recent books. ;-) I thought I'd just give a random update about what's going on with my life and a brief introduction for those of you who don't know me. My name is KathyK, I am 26 years old and live in Waterbury, CT. Once upon a time I thought I might want to leave Connecticut, but I have since decided I *love* New England and Connecticut and would not enjoy living out of the area for very long. I don't know that I can properly describe why I came to this conclusion except to say that Connecticut is HOME--the place I love more than anywhere else in the world. I just don't know that I can feel that about another location. I don't know how I would go about it. I know it's lame. Who says, "I love Connecticut?" No one else I know. Since graduating college, I have simply meandered through my life with no real goals or plans for the future. I have worked as a video store manager, grape picker, door-to-door sales woman, restaurant hostess, and a sit-on-my-bottom-all-day-tethered-to-my-desk-by-a-headset customer service rep for a major wireless telecommuncations company. I accomplished the *one* goal I set for myself about two months ago. I am completely debt free thanks to the generous pay of the aforementioned customer service job . Once the goal had been achieved, my job lost all meaning for me. I quit about two weeks ago, with no prospective job (I *meant* to give notice, really. I just couldn't stand the thought of another 8 hours of whiny, irresponsible customers). It was scary but necessary for my well-being as I hated every minute of every day I was there. Apparently I need more than a paycheck to sustain me. The big Quitting was about two weeks ago now. My quitting nicely coincided with my mother's purchase of a new condo, so I have been doing all the grunt work (painting, cleaning, shelving, making sure door stoppers work...good times) and NOT searching for a job as I ought to be. In the meanwhile I have also been assessing what I enjoy and what I hate doing, based on experiences over the last few years (both with work and with non-work stuff). Because I cannot live my life just working for a paycheck. I don't function that way. I get upset and depressed and chock full of self-loathing. Oh, I bet you are all very happy I gave you my oh so happy work history! Just the best thing ever, right? ;-) Okay, well I enjoy reading and spending time with my friends and making gel candles, although I haven't made some in a while. It turns out my family and friends don't like receiving candles for *every* holiday year after year. And my five-year-old nephew would probably think his Aunt Kathy was insane if she showed up with candles for him. So I need a new hobby. I'm thinking about taking up piano lessons or a foreign language. I enjoy reading about my friends in my LiveJournal, although I don't update it nearly as often as I'd like. My idiotic rantings can be found here: http://opaleye-dragon.livejournal.com/ My friends are much cooler. Really! I also adore photographing clouds. My goal here is to one day photograph the clouds at night. My best friend assures me this is possible in some way for those who have more knowledge of photograpy than 'point and click.' One day I will do it. My recent favorite thing to do has been picking out RL things that remind me of Harry Potter or HPFGU and photographing them--like the shop near my house called "DADA" and a little sample of vodka from the liquor store called "UV." Yeah, it's real geeky, but so what? :-) Blah, blah. Enough about me. What's going on with everyone else? Alla: It is unexpected to me to hear you say it but not for the reason you would think. I DO understand attachment to one place, to one city, because that is how I grew up in Ukraine. People were living in one place pretty much their whole life, families lived closed by, one went to school, college, got married, have kids, etc, etc, pretty much in the same city. Well, of course people could go on vacation, or some unusual circumstances forced moving, but permanent moving did not occur that often. It had many bad moments (like goverment not allowing many people to go abroad, etc), but living your life in the same city also had some good moments - you know, friends who were like family, because you were friends all your life, family close-by and I loved my city ( despite not always having a happy life in Ukraine). It is very old and SO beatiful. So, yes, I understand your love of Connecticut, Kathy. :-) It is just unusual to me because I used to think that most Americans move so often during their lives and they don't form attachment to one city or town. I am happy to be proven wrong. :-) Kathy: > I accomplished the *one* goal I set for myself about two months ago. > I am completely debt free thanks to the generous pay of the > aforementioned customer service job . One of the biggest pains is finding the right color in make-up, and hopefully, one that doesn't cost your entire day's wages. I've been mostly a 'drugstore' shopper using such products as Maybelline EverFresh foundation (the lightest color), which is 'ever' but not 'fresh'**, and Almay Clear Complexion (translucent). Combined they work for me because they don't shift color into orange territory as quickly as others and I don't have to smear it all over my face. This is in addition to using Clean&Clear oil blotting sheets. **Takes me 2-3 washes with bar soap to remove the stuff off my face, but when you're uber oily and Florida heat makes you sweat like a dog, you want make-up that refuses to budge--though, I *know* it's probably clogging pores 'liek whoa'? which may be a good thing for me because I went through 'rough teen years' and my nose and surrounding cheek area ("T-zone") have noticeable pores without the aid of make-up. ;-) Not to knock department store brands because I love Estee Lauder lipstick--in fact, I'm wearing EL now. Its capability to last makes me a little less leery of paying $15-20+ for them but it's more 'trial & error' when it comes to foundations and powders. http://www.cosmeticscop.com/learn/article.asp?PAGETYPE=ART&REFER=MAKEUP&ID=35 I hadn't discovered this link until later last year but the ultra-matte's work best for me and I've been using EverFresh for years, even before Maybelline changed its product name to that. Not the ideal foundation but those that advertised a 'barely there feel', even department store brands, all turned out to be an over-priced product that didn't provide the coverage and staying power I was seeking. Though, from what I'm hearing, it looks like Maybelline is phasing out EverFresh for their 'water-based' line. {rolls eyes} So, I'll probably be looking for a new foundation soon too. Yeah, the 'industrial strength' foundations feel icky by day's end but they do their job! And now, Maybelline is releasing some 'watered down' stuff. I'm thinking about trying MAC's Blot powder (lightest shade) and it's priced at $18.50? err, ouch! Especially after paying $9-11 for Almay's powder and I go through those in 2-3 weeks and this Blot powder is supposedly in a smaller quantity, but in comparison to other, that's? "cheap"?: http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/products/sp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY15108&PRODUCT_ID=PROD1430 http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemID=572/mac_blot_powder/MAC/Pressed_Powders/ Though, some have said they had breakouts from using the product. There's a reason Dionysus is the god of theater. Kemper now: I know that cannibalism is attributed to that sect, but I have difficult believing that claim as most, if not all, western cultures (past and present) view cannibalism as taboo. I believe most cannibalism that occurred at the time can be attributed to famine. Then why, one might ask, is cannibalism attributed to Dionysus? Answer: the conservative hedonist haters spun a web of lies so their sheep wouldn?t stray from the flock. These hateful shepherds don?t want to lose even one valued member of the flock, not because of any altruistic reasons but because of the value (capital wealth, not spiritual investment) of that sheep: meat, milk and wool. As for the claim of human sacrifices, I question that for similar reasons. Which isn?t to say that humans weren?t slain for disrespecting the god. I also have a hard time believing sexual orgy as a spiritual rite. That seems like participating porn and porn is, if not light, then heavy, frivolous and gay, sometimes. And that?s theater. -Kemper --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Use Photomail to share photos without annoying attachments. Amazing book, truly amazing, with rather unusual premise for a fantasy, but SO well -written and so powerful. I highly recommend it to anybody who loves phantasy and actually, even to those who does not love phantasy much, because besides the fact that there is magic in Tigana universe, there are not many typical phantasy elements. I mean, it is a phantasy, but.... not typical. Oh, heck, you have to read it guys, you really do. :-) Since I wanted to hear what other people think about this book, I went on Internet to at least try and find some reviews and while I found many very positive ones, I also found some very negative and It made me think about debate on Main we once had about subjectivity of good writing and I am getting more and more convinced that what constitutes good writing IS subjective. I mean, on the level of the published books, of course, I am not going to say that it is very subjective on the level of bad written fanfictions, but when we are getting into the books, who pass the threshhold of good writing, it gets very murky, IMO. Tigana is a wonderful example. One of the most negative reviews I read about this book critiques EVERYTHING - plot, characters, etc. I was thinking along the lines - what was this guy smoking when he wrote this review. He calls Tigan's plot awkwardly crafted, for example and I was just saying Huh? In any event, read Tigana, I doubt you will be dissapointed. I did like Ruby Red and do like tangerines but never tried them together. Sounded pretty good. :-) But yeah, it's like you find something you enjoy and they stop producing more. In the context of HP, if JKR is only to do seven books and you really enjoy the HP world, it'd be understandable to want JKR to continue. Maybe not continuing Harry's storyline, maybe the years leading up to the destruction of Godric's Hollow where Voldemort was at full strength or the 'Marauders Era' and the undercurrents of Death Eaters forming alliances. > They've even stopped carrying cherry-flavored Rolaids! I'm probably one of the few who doesn't want a 'healthy glow'--I've got oily skin, I don't want or need anything making it 'glow'--and I wouldn't touch a bronzer. As long as I feel fine, I want that paleness and it's as if wanting to be light-skinned needs to be corrected. I actually look at uber tanned folk and think that's unhealthy. I visualize skin cancer, spotting, and 'leather' wrinkling from UV radiation. What irks me at times are the complaints that Dan Radcliffe is too pale. If he's heathly, enjoying life, has an impressive bank account ;-) , why does he need a tan? To look like the rest of Hollywood? It's like the 'goal' for some folk is to be 'thin and tan' and some of us don't want to fit that mould. Whatever reasons, I don't want to look darker than the skintone I acquired through genetics and I certainly don't want to get a tan just to match my foundation. {g} Dina From sopraniste at yahoo.com Wed Mar 22 15:41:26 2006 From: sopraniste at yahoo.com (Maria Holub) Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 07:41:26 -0800 (PST) Subject: [HPFGU-OTChatter] Favorite books again/ good writing and bad writing In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <20060322154127.42350.qmail@web35615.mail.mud.yahoo.com> --- dumbledore11214 wrote: > Erm... just wanted to go back to that thread, sort > of to thank > Sherry Gomes for recommending "Tigana" by Gay > Gavriel Kay. I am constantly on the lookout for new and interesting fantasy novels what with the wait for HP book Seven. Last summer, I came across this book. It had a quote from Clive Barker on the back (one of my fave authors) and so I figured it couldn't be all bad. I was wrong. It was AMAZING!! I've read Magyk three times and couldn't wait for the second book *Septimus Heap Book Two*: *Flyte*. I knew it was coming out soon, but had no idea when. Oh, the joys of working in a bookstore, I got the second book last night and it came out today! WOOHOO! I'm already a hundres pages into it, and it's just as good, if not better, than the first! AND each book comes with a small CD Rom which is totally cool. It's really just the web site on a CD, but the Magyk is portable that way. Check them out, they're totally worth the read!!! SO far I was not dissapointed in any of the recommendations on this list, so after I am done with several other books which I am reading now, I may grab this one. :) Oh, I just wanted to voice my dissapointment about the fantasy writer I SO used to love few years back. Of course, this is totally my opinion and no offense to her fans, especially as I said I used to be a fan for the longest time. I am talking about Mercedes Lackey books. I used to LOVE her Geralds of Valdemar series - all of them. Her retelling of the fairy tales - like Firebird for example I also found to be amazing and still do. But boy, oh boy talk about commercialising success - I am of the very firm opinion that the writer can NOT publish high quality books every what three or four months, I think. It is like high quality stories with the heart morphed into very low quality bookis. Gah! Alla, very dissapointed. Why is it that our favorite products are always discontinued? I KNOW!!! I buy two of my Maybelline Dream Matte foundation every time I go to the store just for that reason! It is the best stuff ever, so of course they will discontinue it. Must keep a stock of it. It's so velvety! Same for Pantene Relaxed and Natural Conditioner. It's for relaxed African-American women's hair, but it works wonders on my wavy, dry, blonde hair. No frizzies. Just because something dosen't have a gigantic demographic, dosen't mean we don't love it. Look at Star Trek. Thousands of fans had a write-in to keep it on the air, but it was cancelled. Now NBC is kicking themselves in the butt for missing out on the franchise. Given enough time, I'll end up with 'negative' income (e.g. I'll be operating in debt). Still, as trivial as the gesture, I do try to remember at least a birthday card and Christmas card. {sigh} I'll have to send one out tomorrow. **Court ruled he was fully capable of getting a job as an engineer or something similar, and in fact, he had turned down past job offers. I wish I could give him more of a benefit of the doubt--he's my dad--but I can't help but be suspicious that he's taking advantage of my income and then he'll point out why he doesn't need to pay full alimony. (Dun dun dun.) ^_~ {g} I'm all for Lex/Lana (or Lexana, which sounds like something out of a sci-fi flick) because Clark/Lana (or Clana, which reminds me of an STD) is so redundant that even TPTB wrote in a line referencing the Clark'n'Lana "rollercoaster". It's like they keep saying they're 'done', they've 'broken up', and a couple episodes later they're back together, only to 'break-up' by the end of the episode. It's worse than a bad soap opera, it's worse than a bad Lifetime movie. And then there's some who wonder what would Lex Luthor see in Lana Lang (other than initials matching) because she's a twit, and I advocate look at Lex's interest in Clark--Smallville DVDs and at least one interview I remember on TVGuide reference UST subtext. Lex likes 'eye candy' twits. ;-) I read this rumour, which might be confirmed by now, awhile back referencing additional snogging between Lex and Lana in an upcoming episode... and Tom Welling is directing that episode. Various folk were kinda amused because it's usually Welling making out with Kristin Kreuk in scenes and now he's directing Rosenbaum to put the moves on Kreuk. However, my favorite het pairing this season would have to be Lionel Luthor and Martha Kent. One of those 'trainwrecks' that's actually interesting. I forgot if I already referenced this here but it'd actually make sense the rift between Clark and Lex being additionally strained by Lionel's actions of bringing in the Kents as his 'family' and alienating (no pun intended) his own son, Lex. There's already reference to Lionel knowing Clark's 'secret' and Jor-El possessing Lionel's body... though, Lionel possessed Clark's body--w00t, pseudo-incest! {snort} >From http://www.windycitymediagroup.com/gay/lesbian/news/ARTICLE.php?AID=8666 [[ In one scene, where Welling is playing Luthor, he's checking out his impressive new body and he looks inside his pants to check out the package. "I think it was in the script, though. I think it was. But Michael [Rosenbaum] and I, last year when I had a scene where I was having a massage and Michael came in, we worked out a father/son thing where I stood up and was sort of putting my bathrobe on where he looked down and checked out his dad's package. That didn't make it to the final cut." ]] The whole Glover interview is an interesting read. He seems like a very nice guy. I've also jumped on the Lexana bandwagon, mostly because I have the hots for both of them and once they're together . . . well, that's just all the more hot, right? Not 3D as in careful use of perspective, and not 3D as in a sculpture, but 3D like a Victorian kid's cardboard theatre. JKR is painted on a plane that actually sits in front of the background. So does the table, and the radiator in the corner is made up of several layers. The whole thing is given a very exaggerated perspective so that it looks correct when you view it standing straight in front, but zany from other viewing angles. After you have clicked the "OPT OUT" button, another page comes up stating that you have successfully opted out, Be careful! NOT to click on the next button shown. It is an "Opt Back In" button that, if clicked, will UNDO the opt-out. --------------------------------- Blab-away for as little as 1?/min. Make PC-to-Phone Calls using Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. Offhand, the earliest reference I remember seeing Yahoo's web beacons is from 2002, and since then, these 'reminder' posts have been sent to mailing lists off and on for the past four years. Again, it's fine to send this message out but I think accuracy in this policy being around for years should also be included. If it was a 'public' toilet, I do remember resorting to using the cardboard core one time and disposing the core in the 'sanitary napkin' container nearby... fortunately, I only had to wee-wee then. At the time of the sale, many prints were sold out but it was still amusing to read some of the shirts at http://www.threadless.com/catalog Dina From jamiesonwolf at gmail.com Thu Mar 30 22:59:00 2006 From: jamiesonwolf at gmail.com (Jamieson Villeneuve) Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2006 17:59:00 -0500 Subject: The DaVinci Code Web Quest Message-ID: <5cb2ac630603301459w53fba673s99739ed90f19160d@mail.gmail.com> Hey Everyone, On the topic of good and bad books (or good and bad authors) I know that a lot of people will disagree with me when I say that The DaVinci Code is an amazing book. I know there are quite a few people who will agree with me though, so that's all good. I'm about halfway through the book in paperback format and am loving every minute of it. Even if it IS trash, at least it's trash that makes me think. Checking out www.danbrown.com (I always like to find out all the info I can about a book I'm reading...I'm wierd that way) I stumbled upon the DaVinci Code Web Quest put together by Dan Brown for the site. IT'S TOTALLY COOL! It's a multi-layered game that takes you all over the web and even sending and recieving emails and making phone calls to figure out the clues. (Don't worry, you don't get charged long distance for the phone calls) Here's the link to the web quest: http://www.randomhouse.com/doubleday/davinci/index-ctc.html Now, I solved this thing myself after DAYS of working on it, only to find that the answers to all the questions or "Gates" you have to get through are on the web. Sigh. I'll give you the link for those too. But promise you'll try it without the cheats first and only resort to them if you're aboslutely stuck. Scroll down for the link to that site. Try it out. It's a WONDERFUL piece of brain candy, even if you didn't like the book.
