Erm... just wanted to go back to that thread, sort of to thank
Sherry Gomes for recommending "Tigana" by Gay Gavriel Kay.

Amazing book, truly amazing, with rather unusual premise for a
fantasy, but SO well -written and so powerful.

I highly recommend it to anybody who loves phantasy and actually,
even to those who does not love phantasy much, because besides the
fact that there is magic in Tigana universe, there are not many
typical phantasy elements. I mean, it is a phantasy, but.... not
typical.

Oh, heck, you have to read it guys, you really do. :-)

Since I wanted to hear what other people think about this book, I
went on Internet to at least try and find some reviews and while I
found many very positive ones, I also found some very negative and
It made me think about debate on Main we once had about subjectivity
of good writing and I am getting more and more convinced that what
constitutes good writing IS subjective.

I mean, on the level of the published books, of course, I am not
going to say that it is very subjective on the level of bad written
fanfictions, but when we are getting into the books, who pass the
threshhold of good writing, it gets very murky, IMO.

Tigana is a wonderful example. One of the most negative reviews I
read about this book critiques EVERYTHING - plot, characters, etc.

I was thinking along the lines - what was this guy smoking when he
wrote this review. He calls Tigan's plot awkwardly crafted, for
example and I was just saying Huh?

In any event, read Tigana, I doubt you will be dissapointed.
